The hub for several dozen online gambling businesses, San Jose, Costa Rica, was spared any significant damage from Wednesday’s 7.6 magnitude earthquake just 100 miles to the west.
The powerful earthquake rattled nerves across the region. It was centered more than 28 miles deep on the Pacific coast in Samara. The Geological Survey originally measured the quake at magnitude 7.9, but revised it downward. The quake struck at just before 10:45 am EDT
Most of the online gambling sites were still up and running and it was business as usual as the majority of operators still had power. Many sportsbook clerks ran out of their respective buildings during what was described as a “built up shaking” and “the biggest quake ever experienced”.
Many poker pros were also affected by Wednesday's quake as quite a few US-based players have since relocated to the Central American nation, some closer to the epicenter.
Boulders came rolling down onto nearby highways and groceries were toppled off shelves.
