UK bookies took quite a hit this week after a cash-strapped Weymouth team lost to Rushden and Diamonds a score of 9-0.  Punters anticipated the results after it was learned that their beloved Weymouth team was going on strike.   The bookie, however, were a little late to the punch and ended up paying around £1million to the happy Weymouth fans who bet against their team.

According to the Daily Mail, online betting exchanges and high street betting shops were inundated with people trying to place bets on a Rushden win, with many being forced to cut odds and then suspend betting entirely.

More than £680,000 was put on a Rushden victory on the Betfair exchange alone.

Weymouth was forced to play their youth squad due to the strike.

The odds on a Rushden win were slashed from an early 15-8 to 5-4 on the night before the game, and they were down to 4-6 on before kick-off.

Aside from the bookies, not everyone was happy with the massive payouts to punters.

One individual commented on the Daily Mail piece:

"As a Weymouth FAN I hope these people place their winnings into the funds to try and save the club: although I doubt they will.
One word to describe my feelings for them: Ashamed!"
