Mexico and Trinidad and Tobago fight for top position in Group C Wednesday night.

Mexico will need all three points against Trinidad and Tobago in order to finish first in Group C of the 2015 Gold Cup. El Tri opened up the tournament with a 6-0 thrashing of an undermanned Cuba, but was unable to produce a goal against Guatemala in its second outing en route to a 0-0 tie. The last game was undoubtedly disappointing for the Mexicans, who were squarely the favorites over their Central American neighbors, and the offense will need to be better against Trinidad and Tobago. Despite having 80 percent position and 19 shot attempts, Mexico did not look threatening. Carlos Vela was held in check, and Oribe Peralta, who had a hat-trick against Cuba, played poorly and fluffed his lines on a clear opportunity to score in the second half. Perhaps Giovani dos Santos will start up front in an effort to reinvigorate Mexico’s attack.

Trinidad and Tobago has looked solid at the back, conceding just one goal to Guatemala in its opening match in a 3-1 victory and holding Cuba scoreless in a 2-0 win. Defender Sheldon Bateau has scored a goal in each of his country’s first two games, and another goal could make him an unlikely top scorer after the group stage. A win or draw in this game will pair the Caribbean nation with Panama in the quarterfinals, whereas a loss would mean a matchup with Costa Rica. Although Costa Rica has not looked particularly strong thus far, Trinidad and Tobago will surely be hoping to avoid the 2014 World Cup quarterfinalists.

Mexico knows that it must produce a better effort against Trinidad and Tobago, but a positive result is far from guaranteed. Trinidad and Tobago will try to keep this game close with a defensive-minded approach, and under 2.5 goals should be scored. And while Mexico is once again a big favorite, this game could very well end in a tie, perhaps 0-0 or 1-1.
