  • PA sports betting will have the highest tax rate in the nation
  • Only two casinos have filed for sportsbook applications so far
  • Those sportsbooks won't be up and running until November, the earliest

At 34% plus an extra 2% tax, Pennsylvania will have the highest tax on sports betting in the nation, and it is the gamblers that will ultimately feel the pain.  Compare that with just 7% in the state of Nevada, not to mention the ZERO taxes imposed by internationally-licensed online betting sites, many of which have been in business for nearly 20 years now.

The tax situation is unlikely to deter casinos from opening sportsbooks in the long run.  Two - Parx outside of Philadlephia and the Mount Airy Resort in the Poconos - have already filed applications.   If approved, they could have sportsbooks open in time for when the Eagles play in their second consecutive Super Bowl (just saying).

With Football season being the most lucrative (September through Super Bowl in late January or the first week in February), it's easy to see the majority of casinos holding off opening sportsbooks until next season and holding out to see if the state will lower that steep tax rate.  Other casino properties can sit back and watch Parx and Mount Airy act as the test cases.  PA is such a large state, few casinos are concerned with the competition, or otherwise losing a step in the process.

Even with Parx and Mount Airy having already applied, the state board won't consider the applications until some time in October.  If approved, neither is likely to have a sportsbook up and running in before the College Bowl games.
