How Abarrio Got Here
Abarrio is the winner of both the Florida Derby-G1 and Holy Bull-G3, both of which were his last two starts heading into the Kentucky Derby.
Of his five starts, Abarrio has only failed to win in one of those (the Kentucky Jockey Club-G2) with a 3rd place finish.
Why His Florida Derby Win Matters
When it comes to studying the 2022 Kentucky Derby payouts, a win at the Florida Derby truly stands out. That's because a total of 15 Florida Derby winners have gone on to be victorious at the Kentucky Derby. Always Dreaming was the last to do so in 2017.
News Ahead of the Kentucky Derby
White Abarrio wowed trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. while breezing a half-mile between races during an impromptu workout on Saturday afternoon’s program at Gulfstream Park.
That finish on four furlongs was 48:23 seconds over a fast track between races 10 and 11 before galloping out six furlongs in 1:12:38 and seven in 1:25:15.
“Wow. That’s all I can say is ‘wow,’” Joseph said. “He worked super. He worked super.”
A Look at Saffie Joseph Jr.
Saffie Joseph Jr., the son of a horse trainer, made national headlines when his Math Wizard enjoyed an upset win in the $1 million Pennsylvania Derby in 2019.
That was the first graded stakes win for Joseph, a native of Barbados who began training in south Florida in 2011.
He ranked 4th in wins among trainers during the Gulfstream Park's 2018-19 championship meet.
