Top Ranked Teams 1-5 Against The Spread in 2019 March Madness

Of the top six ranked teams, only one covered in the first round of the 2019 NCAA Men's College Basketball Tournament.  That team was Gonzaga, not ranked No. 1 at the time.

We went back to 2019, skipping over the last two seasons.  One we know was suspended, another - last year - was significantly altered due to the pandemic.

So is the strategy this year to bet against the top six ranked teams?

Here's another interesting trend from that year: Teams ranked 18, 20, 21, 22, 24, 25 each failed to win outright.  Only two of the teams ranked within the No. 18 to 25 range managed to win.   In other words only two of the bottom 8 among the top 25 ranked won outright.

So we went back another year to 2018.

1 - Virginia - failed cover (they also shockingly lost)

2 - Villanova - covered

3- Xavier - failed cover (by just a half point)

4- Kansas - covered

5 - Michigan State - failed cover

As you can see, this season was split. But there were some close calls.

6 - Cincinnati - covered (by one point)

7 - Michigan - covered

8 - Gonzaga - failed cover

9 - Duke - covered (by one point)

10 - UNC - push

The story here is that not all seasons are the same.

You definitely will want to consider any of the dogs facing a top 10 team within a teaser based on the 2018-19 trends.

But just in case one of these is an outlier, let's look at the results from the 2017-18 season.

1 - failed cover

2 - failed cover

3 - covered

4 - push

5 - failed cover

6 - covered

7 - failed cover (by 1 point)

8 - failed cover

9 - covered (by 1 point)

10 - failed cover

The top 10 teams went 3-9 Against The Spread this season.
