Philadelphia Union v. Portland Timbers Betting: Both Teams to Score MLS Trend Continues

The MLS is Back Tournament is down to just two more games as the first semifinal kicked off in Orlando Wednesday night as Philadelphia Union faced Portland Timbers FC. Neither team was expected to get this far but both have played consistent soccer over the last two weeks with great goalkeeping leading the way. Portland entered the game as a slight favorite at +141 to Philadelphia’s +166.

The Timbers have dominated this meeting historically with six wins and three draws in 10 overall matchups. The Union’s only win in the series was a 3-0 win at home in 2015. Last season Portland went to Philadelphia and won 3-1 with two goals from Brian Fernandez, who is now playing in Argentina, and one from Diego Valeri.

A key trend continued on this matchup: Both teams scored.

It's not as easy as it seems.  In fact, Philadelphia didn't get its first goal until Andrew Wooten’s clean-up goal in the 85th minute. Wooten made it 2-1 after Jamiro Monteiro’s curling free kick was pawed off the line by Steve Clark.

That made for nine straight games as the MLS Is Back tournament coming to a close where both sides scored.  Prior to this streak, three of four games had only one team score.

Portland Timbers FC: Feed the Attack

The Portland Timbers fell behind NYCFC on Saturday night before scoring three unanswered goals for a 3-1 quarterfinal win. Sebastian Blanco tied the game in the 43rd minute before Valeri put the Timbers on top in the 65th minute. Andy Polo put the match away with a long-distance laser in the 76th minute while Steve Clark made two saves.

Portland went 2-0-1 in the group stage to win Group F with seven points. They had to go to penalty kicks to beat FC Cincinnati in the round of 16 game after a 1-1 draw through 90 minutes. Clark, who saved a PK against the LA Galaxy in the group opener, stood tall in the shootout to deny Cincinnati the upset.

Jeremy Ebobisse scored in each of the group games while playmaker Sebastian Blanco has five assists and two goals in Orlando. Valeri has also scored twice as has Jaroslaw Niezgoda. Portland entered the knockout round at +900 to win it all, down from +2500 when the tournament began.

In Wednesday night's seminfinal game, the Timbers drew first blood in the 13th minute with Jeremy Ebobisse going unchallenged and Union left back Kai Wagner caught ball-watching.

Sebastian Blanco then made it 2-0 in the 70th minute after Valeri’s service was flicked on by Dario Zuparic.

Each of these sides has seen both teams score in four of their last five games.

The YES in this matchup is offered up at 4/7, typical odds that, while pricey, make sense as this trend continues to sizzle.

CFB Betting – South Carolina Gamecocks at Florida Gators

Over the years we’ve watched the SEC evolve into a high-scoring league led by talented quarterbacks. One player taking the reins from last year’s Heisman winner Joe Burrow is Kyle Trask. After throwing for six touchdowns in a season-opening win Trask is on pace to throw 60 scoring passes. Trask leads the No. 3 ranked Florida Gators into Saturday’s home opener against conference rival South Carolina Gamecocks. Florida has won two straight and four of the last five between the schools while going 15-2 all-time against the Cocks in the Swamp. The Gators are an 18-point favorite on the current college football betting line which would be the largest in the series in over a decade.
