After a highly successful MLS is Back Tournament in Orlando the league is heading back to regular season play with regional games and Thursday night the New York Red Bulls host their rivals NYCFC. The first Hudson River Derby match of 2020 will take place at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey which will be NYCFC’s temporary home as well while Yankee Stadium is unavailable to them due to COVID-19 restrictions and NY Yankees home games. The Hudson River Derby kicks off at 7:00 p.m. Thursday night on the YES Network.

Thursday’s game will be the 17th Hudson River Derby, the 15th in MLS action. NYRB leads the way with nine total wins including seven in MLS games while the teams have two draws. The New York rivals split the two games last season with each team winning at home 2-1 and NYCFC haven’t won at Red Bull Arena since June 2017 with one draw and three losses in their last four trips to Jersey.

New York Red Bulls Outlook: Press Forward

The three games in Orlando boosted RBNY into a tie for fifth place in the Eastern Conference as they beat Atlanta United 1-0 before falling 2-0 to both Columbus Crew and FC Cincinnati. Those results left RBNY in third place in Group E and they did not qualify for the knockout round of the tournament.

Midfielder Florian Valot scored their lone goal in Orlando and RBNY have just five goals in five games this season. No player has scored more than one goal while Valot leads the team with two assists. RBNY scored three goals in a season-opening win over FC Cincinnati on March 1, their only game at Red Bull Arena so far this season.

Keeper David Jensen has started all five games for Chris Armas’ side this season. He has 10 saves but has allowed seven goals with one clean sheet. The Red Bulls made the MLS playoffs last season but lost in the Eastern Conference quarterfinals to Philadelphia Union 4-3.

NYCFC Outlook: Find Consistency

The MLS is Back Tournament was a mixed bag for NYCFC as they began with very favorable odds to win the whole thing but limped out of Group A in third place with one win and two losses. They got help to sneak into the knockout round as the last team and went on to upset Toronto FC 3-1 before losing to eventual champions Portland Timbers FC 3-1 in the quarterfinals.

The three group games count in the regular season standings leaving NYCFC in 12th place overall with just one win in five games this year. Jesus Medina scored three of the five NYCFC goals in Orlando with Maxi Moralez tallying a goal and an assist. NYCFC were shutout in their first three games of 2020 after leading the MLS in goals scored last year.

Veteran goalie Sean Johnson has started all seven games for NYCFC this year with 23 saves and 10 goals allowed. His lone clean sheet came in the group finale against Inter Miami FC with a 1-0 win.

New York Red Bulls v. NYCFC Betting Odds By RealBookies PPH Site

Red Bulls to win: +149

NYCFC to win: +162

Draw: +236

Over/Under: 2.5 goals (O -109, U -120)

Both teams have struggled to score so far this season with the RBNY defense having a slight advantage. Red Bull Arena has been a tough place for The Boys in Blue to play historically with one win in nine trips. RBNY has had a little more time off to regroup after the MLS is Back Tournament and are in prime position to kickoff Phase 1 of the MLS restart with a win.
