NFL Week 3 By the Numbers

Seattle QB Russell Wilson is on fire. Wilson broke Patrick Mahomes record for the most touchdown passes in the first three games of a season when he threw five more on Sunday in the Seahawks win over Dallas. Wilson now has 14 touchdown passes on the season.

The Seahawks, 5.5-point favorites over the Cowboys, were one of the largest favorites to cover in Week 3. The Colts at -11.5 were the biggest as they pounded the Jets.

Here’s a look at Week 3 of the 2020 NFL season by the numbers.

Cover Me

The Jets are so bad they were 11.5-point underdogs to the Colts. It got ugly early as Xavier Rhodes picked off a Sam Darnold pass and returned it for a touchdown early in the first quarter. By halftime, it was 17-7 Indy.

Darnold enjoyed giving the Colts points so much he threw another pick-six in the third quarter and then got tackled in the end zone for a safety in the fourth.

When it was all said and done, Indy easily covered the 11.5-point spread with a 36-7 victory.

Dogs Win

A six-point underdog at Los Angeles, Carolina faced the Chargers without star RB Christian McCaffrey. It turned out all the Panthers needed was kicker Joey Slye who nailed five field goals in a 21-16 Carolina win.

It was a similar situation in Arizona where the Cardinals were 5.5-point home favorites. Detroit hadn’t won a game in 11 tries dating back to last season. In the end, a Matt Prater last-second field goal would give the Lions their first win of the season, 26-23. What will the Cardinals be in this 2020 NFL season?

Green Bay was a rare dog playing in New Orleans. Aaron Rodgers threw three touchdown passes in a battle of future Hall of Fame quarterbacks. The Saints Drew Brees also threw for three scores, but Green Bay got the cover with a 37-30 victory.

Falcon Down

Last week, Atlanta blew a double-digit lead and lost to Dallas. In Week 3 at home, the Falcons were a 2.5-point favorite over the Bears. Atlanta held a 26-10 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Chicago got tired of QB Mitchell Trubisky and sent in backup Nick Foles. The result was a 30-26 Bears victory. Atlanta became the first team in NFL history to lose consecutive games after holding a lead of 15 points or more. They have killed a ton of survivor pools and free sports picks.

Going Over

So far in 2020, the Over is 28-18-1, including 5-4 in nine prime time games. The Dallas-Seattle matchup had the highest total in Week 3 set at 57. The Seahawks and Cowboys did not disappoint. Speaking of disappointing, check out my last article, NFL Week 3 betting tips.

Wilson’s five touchdown passes overshadowed 472 yards and three touchdowns by Dallas QB Dak Prescott. It was 23-15 at the half and the scoring continued ending to end at a total of 69, 38-31.

Sunday night’s Packers-Saints game was also expected to be high-scoring despite the absence of wide receivers Michael Thomas (Saints) and Davante Adams (Packers). The total of 52 was easily eclipsed by the end of the third quarter with the game tied at 27-27.
