NFL Week 2 MNF Odds – Detroit Lions at Green Bay Packers

The entire NFC North lost in Week 1 making the Monday night matchup between the Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers a battle for first-place in the division. The Lions haven’t won a division title since 1993 and in order to share the lead early in the 2021 season they’ll have to end a four-game losing skid to the Pack. And there are issues with the defending division champs after getting massacred by the Saints in their opener. Aaron Rodgers had the worst game of his career and looks to rebound against a team he’s had plenty of success against. Oddsmakers weren’t swayed by the beatdown positioning Green Bay as an 11-point favorite to conclude the Week 2 betting schedule.

Odds Analysis

The line is an indication of what oddsmakers and the betting public think about both squads. Even though they got shredded, 38-3, by New Orleans in Week 1, the Packers hit the board as a 10.5-point favorite and the line was wagered up a full point to Green Bay -11.5. The Lions covered in their opening day loss but needed a frantic finish to sneak in the backdoor. They covered the 9.5-point line in their 41-33 setback outscoring San Francisco 23-3 over the final quarter 20 minutes. Falling behind by 28 points until that point shows there’s still a lot of work to do in MoTown.

Detroit Lions

There was good and bad from the Week 1 loss. The bad is that the defense didn’t improve much from the disaster of last season. The Lions allowed the most points of any team in Week 1 with Frisco totaling 442 yards. And the group was equally bad against the run as it was against the pass. The Lions yielded 319 yards and two touchdowns through the air while giving up 131 yards on the ground. The Niners averaged 8.0 yards per play.

Coming back from a 28-point deficit the Lions didn’t give up and made the final score respectable. They cashed for backers by scoring a pair of touchdowns and 2-point conversions in the last two minutes. They even got the ball back later in the quarter after a Niners turnover, but failed to complete the comeback. After a sluggish start in his debut, Jared Goff finished with good numbers completing 38 of 57 for 338 yards and three touchdowns. A lot of that came with the Niners playing a prevent defense with such a big lead. The bugaboo that got Goff exiled from LA showed up again. He tossed a pick-six late in the first half that gave the Niners a 28-10 lead.

The Lions allowed more than 30 points in both games against the Packers last season going 0-2 SU and 1-1 ATS. They’ve dropped four in a row overall but are 7-1 ATS in the previous eight meetings. The pass defense will be impacted by the loss of Jeffrey Okudah, who sustained a season-ending Achilles injury last week. That leaves an already susceptible secondary shorthanded against the reigning MVP.

Green Bay Packers

Rodgers typically doesn’t have two bad games in a row so we can expect the Packers to put forth a much better effort. Maybe the offseason shenanigans affected his performance, which is one reason why Rodgers looked so bad. He completed just 15 of 28 passes for 133 yards and was intercepted twice. One thing Rodgers and the Packers have done in the past is protect the football. Rodgers had only five interceptions last season.

It’s only one game and I’ll give Green Bay the benefit of the doubt. After all they earned the NFC’s top seed by winning 13 games last season reaching the conference title game for a second straight season. And Rodgers didn’t become a bad player over the summer. He tried his best to calm everyone after the loss saying, “I’m not going to make it bigger than it was. You move on to the next opponent. If we’re starting to freak out after one week, we’re in big trouble.”

The fact that the entire team stunk against the Saints is concerning, though. The offensive line struggled in pass protection and had a tough time creating lanes with the Pack rushing for only 43 yards on 15 carries. But Rodgers has had some big games against the Lions, and playing at home for the first time should help the recovery process.

Rodgers is facing the right opponent to make up for last week’s disaster. The Lions were bad even with Okudah in the lineup and facing last year’s MVP leaves some major holes in the secondary. I see the Pack winning the game, but laying 11.5 points is a lot so I’m backing the visitors.

NFL Score Prediction: Packers 27, Lions 20
