  • Despite gaining Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski Tampa is still not favorite to win NFC South
  • Bucs pay $156 for every $100 bet to win their division
  • Saints come into the season as a -130 favorite
  • The Saints are the most complete team in the division and they are a threat to win the NFC, claims Bookmaker

Add the GOAT to a seven-win team and you have an immediate contender. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers saw their stock rise when Tom Brady put his name on a free agent contract, becoming an instant threat to knock off three-time defending NFC South champion New Orleans Saints. Still fuming after getting knocked out of the playoffs the last three seasons before reaching their Super Bowl goal, including twice in overtime, the window for the Saints is still open, though Drew Brees is now the second-best quarterback in the division. Don’t quit on the Atlanta Falcons, who could make some noise. The rebuild got underway in Carolina with the release of Cam Newton and hiring a new coach.

Odds to Win 2020 NFC South

New Orleans Saints -130
Tampa Bay Buccaneers +156

Atlanta Falcons +865
Carolina Panthers +2400

NFC South Preview

Holding on to a number of pieces from a club that won 13 games in each of the last two seasons, the Saints surfaced as a negative odds favorite to win their fourth straight NFC South title. And you know the Saints are going to take advantage of the opportunity as they make up for lost time. It took 20 seasons before the franchise enjoyed its first winning season and playoff appearance, and it was another five seasons after that before they claimed their first division title.

In 39 seasons before Brees and Sean Payton arrived, the Saints had seven winning campaigns. Since 2006 they’ve put together seven seasons of 10 or more wins, six division crowns and eight playoff stops. They’ve had one of the top offenses in the game with Brees leading the way. He missed five games last season with a thumb injury, the first games he’s missed due to injury since becoming a Saint. Still, he led the NFL completing 74.3 percent of his passes for 2,979 yards and 27 TDs with only picks in 378 attempts.

The weapon of choice was Michael Thomas, who led the league in catches and receiving yards while averaging nearly 108 yards per game. The next closest receiver was Ted Ginn with 30 receptions, so the Saints acquired Emmanuel Sanders as a complement. Alvin Kamara is a dual threat out of the backfield and Taysom Hill creates excitement whenever he’s on the field. Defensively the Saints should be strong with upgrades in the secondary.

Now that Brady traded his parka for a speedo, there hasn’t been this much excitement over the Bucs in some time. Their current run of 12 seasons without a playoff appearance is the second-longest in the NFL. The Bucs were stymied by inconsistent play of Jameis Winston, who threw 30 interceptions last season. Brady totaled 29 picks in 2,196 attempts over the last four years.

The pieces are in place for an electric offense. Mike Evans and Chris Godwin combined for 153 catches, 2,490 yards and 17 touchdowns, and Brady’s buddy Rob Gronkowski came out of retirement. The defense was suspect allowing 270.1 passing yards per game, next to last, and 28.1 points. Antoine Winfield beefs up the secondary and the first two levels are solid. The Bucs need to be a lot stronger on this side of the football to avoid a number of shootouts.

With one win in their first eight games folks in Atlanta were calling for Dan Quinn’s head. They didn’t get it and instead watched the team turn things around by winning six of their final eight. That wasn’t enough to prevent a massive overhaul, especially on defense. The Falcons struggled on that side of the football and parted ways with a number of players, including former sack leader Vic Beasley. They nabbed A.J. Terrell and Marlon Davidson with their first two draft picks and brought over Dante Fowler. The Falcons should be better, but playing in the NFC South with a leaky D is disastrous.

The hope is that Todd Gurley has something left to ignite a ground game that ranked 30th in the league. It’s a calculated risk that will pay off handsomely if successful. Matt Ryan and Julio Jones form one of the top pass-catch combos in the NFL and should keep the Falcons in a lot of games.

With the release of Cam Newton and Luke Kuechly retiring, the Carolina Panthers lost their leaders on both sides of the ball. Toss in a new coach in Matt Rhule and it could be a long season. Teddy Bridgewater came all the way back from a near career-ending injury to lead the Saints to five wins when taking over for Brees. He parlayed that success into a deal with the Panthers where he returns to a full-time starting gig. Christian McCaffrey is now the face of the franchise. The Panthers used all seven of their draft picks on defenders to fix a unit that ranked next to last allowing nearly 30 points per game.

2020 NFC South Pick

The Saints are the most complete team in the division and they are a threat to win the NFC. After three gut-wrenching playoff exits, I expect New Orleans to play with a chip on its shoulder, and that’s not good for the rest of the division. A stronger defense will allow Brady and the Bucs to challenge, but there are too many concerns.
