The expectations for the Dallas Cowboys are always high. Sometimes it’s warranted other times it isn’t. But that’s the problem with being America’s Team. After going 8-8 and missing the playoffs last season, the Cowboys finally jettisoned Jason Garrett, replacing him with Mike McCarthy. The former Super Bowl winning coach has a talented roster to work with raising the bar in Big D. The Los Angeles Rams are also going through a transition whacking a number of high-priced players in an attempt to conform to salary cap restrictions. They aren’t near the team that reached the Super Bowl just two seasons ago.  Bookmaker is offering a generous welcome bonus (max bonus $1000)

Odds Analysis

There hasn’t been a lot of movement on the opening line, which had the Boys a 3-point road favorite. There was some buyback on the Rams pushing the number to its current 2.5. There are a lot of unknowns for both teams entering the season and this is the first game at the Rams new lot. Too bad fans won’t be allowed into the $5 billion SoFi Stadium. The clubs got together near the end of last season with the Cowboys posting a 44-21 home victory ending a two-game skid against their NFC counterpart. The teams have put a lot of points on the board in recent outings cashing the OVER in four straight encounters. Bettors have taken notice pushing the total from its opening of 50 to its current 51.5.

Dallas Cowboys

The Cowboys had a strong offense last season under the direction of Dak Prescott finishing with the most yards and the sixth-most points. Statistically it was Prescott’s best season with 4,902 passing yards and 30 touchdowns. Is there a chance he can be better? That’s what McCarthy will attempt to do. Under his watch the Packers had some of the most potent offenses in the league, and there are certainly enough weapons to put up big numbers again.

The second-best passing attack may have gotten stronger with the addition of CeeDee Lamb. The Oklahoma speedster joins Amari Cooper and Michael Gallup to form a formidable trio. Cooper’s 79 catches, 1,189 receiving yards and eight touchdowns led the club with Gallup averaging nearly 17 yards on his 66 receptions. They will go up against Jalen Ramsey, one of the top corners in the game who recently signed an extension.

Despite the lack of preseason games and a relaxed training camp, McCarthy and his staff ran a tight camp looking to come out of the gate fast. “I think a number of teams lose games early in the season as opposed to getting beat. We need to focus on the things we have accomplished in camp. Our expectation is to keep the focus tight,” he said.

Los Angeles Rams

There will be a different look around the club with a bunch of different players and three new coordinators on the staff. That hasn’t changed the vision for Sean McVay, who enters his fourth season and is still the youngest coach in the NFL. He’s been through a lot during his tenure but he’s never gone through a losing season.

Todd Gurley was one of the team’s financial casualties, released shortly after signing a big extension. The best back in the league for two seasons wasn’t the same after an injury late in 2018. His numbers declined drastically last year and Jared Goff wasn’t able to make up for it. I guess you could say it’s Goff’s team now and he needs to perform like it for the offense to operate at a high level. He led the NFL in pass attempts but his percentage, yards and touchdowns all dropped from the previous year.

The Rams will have to reinvent their offense while relying on two superstars to hold down opponents. Ramsey helped the unit improve its numbers following his acquisition and Aaron Donald is the best lineman in the NFL. Donald posted 12.5 sacks and led the league for a second straight season in tackles for loss with 20. Disrupting Prescott and Dallas’ passing game will be a key for success.

The way the teams scored points against each other and everyone else the last few years it’s easy to side with the over. Dallas has plenty of weapons that McCarthy will get the best out of and McVay is still the boy genius. You can often overlook the other side of the football given both club’s strength is offense. That could be a mistake. The Cowboys were actually decent last year and the Rams got better with Ramsey. While the total goes up I’ll take the UNDER in an upset Rams victory.

NFL Score Prediction: Rams 26, Cowboys 21
