Maybe this is what the Cleveland Browns need. You might recall the hype surrounding them last offseason. A strong finish to 2018 along with the acquisition of Odell Beckham Jr. among others added to the euphoria. One thing the team didn’t do was hire the right coach. Freddie Kitchens was overmatched and they stumbled to a 6-10 record. The Browns brought in Kevin Stefanski to clean up the mess and he has the same cast of characters to work with. This is an exciting group and the hope is that Stefanski can mold them better than the previous coach. Ending the longest current playoff drought in the NFL will require the Browns to win at least nine games putting them over their projected total. But this is the Browns.

2020 Cleveland Browns Offense Preview

Just how effective the offense can be depends on how Baker Mayfield develops. Part of the optimism heading into 2019 was because the former No. 1 overall pick delivered some clutch games and led with swagger and bravado. Mayfield entered a situation where he wasn’t expected to be the starter and the club was starting its rebuild. It’s easy to play when there are no expectations.

With the perception change heading into last season, the Browns threw up all over themselves. Maybe they couldn’t handle the buzz, maybe Kitchens was just a horrible coach, or maybe the Browns just aren’t that good. The latter is hard to imagine. They have loads of talent at the skill positions and Mayfield can’t be as bad as he was in 2019. Accuracy was a big issue with Mayfield connecting on just 59.4 percent of his throws.

The line wasn’t good but the group wasn’t responsible for all the issues. Mayfield should feel more secure in the pocket this year after the team signed Jack Conklin and drafted Jedrick Wills Jr. OBJ is healthy and along with Jarvis Landry form a potent receiver duo. The backfield is solid with Nick Chubb, who rushed for nearly 1,500 yards, and Kareem Hunt sharing the ball. If Mayfield nears what he did his rookie season the Browns can potentially score a lot of points.

2020 Cleveland Browns Defense Preview

The disappointment of last season seeped over to this side of the football, too. The Browns were next to last against the run allowing nearly 145 yards per game while conceding 24.6 points per contest. Losing Myles Garrett to suspension due to his ugly helmet swinging incident didn’t help. The Browns recorded only 38 sacks with Garrett amassing 10 of those in 10 games before going on the shelf.

Now that he’s been shown the money the pressure is on Garrett to not only lead by example, i.e. stop the stupid stuff. He’s also expected to continue being one of the top edge rushers in the NFL. The team needs him to stay on the field. Stronger seasons from Olivier Vernon and Sheldon Richardson will help improve numbers across the board.

The second level wasn’t good last year and the loss of Joe Schobert thins the ranks. There are potential replacements that need to step up, but this is a huge area of concern. The secondary wasn’t put in good spots last season with a poor pass rush and the inability to stop the run. There is talent with four first or second round picks possibility getting starting assignments.

2020 Cleveland Browns Schedule Analysis

No hype leading into the season is the best thing for the Browns. The darlings of the league prior to last season, they went up in flames with an opening thumping by the Titans. The Browns can send a message that they mean business in this year’s opener. Not only is the matchup with the Ravens an AFC North tilt it also comes against preseason Super Bowl favorite and the club that won a league-high 14 games a year ago. No matter the outcome of the opener the next two games are pivotal. Home games against Cincinnati and Washington have to be won.

A rematch with the Titans starts the closing month of games. Included in that stretch are tilts against division foes Baltimore and Pittsburgh in the finale sandwiched around a trip to the rotten apple for games with the Giants and Jets. The Week 15 contest with the G-Men will be must-see football since it’s the first for Beckham against the team that traded him away. The last month will be the make-or-break portion for the Browns.

I drank the Kool-Aid last season buying into the hype and going over on the Browns win total. They upgraded at several positions and should be better. However, I’m cautiously optimistic that Stefanski can get more out of the team than Kitchens did. The key is Mayfield and we don’t know what to expect from him. I’m not sold on this team winning at least nine games so the under is the right move.
