Somehow the Chicago Bears finished 8-8 last season. They did it with an offense that was one of the most pathetic in the NFL behind a quarterback who was the second overall pick in the 2017 draft. Granted it wasn’t all the fault of Mitchell Trubisky, but when a team invests it expects results. The Bears aren’t too far off from the team that won 12 games and the NFC North title in 2018, though. The defense should be among the best and with any help from the guys on the other side of the football getting over the projected win total of eight should happen.

2020 Chicago Bears Offense Preview

What a difference a season makes. Two years ago rookie coach Matt Nagy owned Chicago by leading the Bears to a 12-4 record, their first winning season in six years, and the offense actually showed signs of life. With the bar raised heading into last season the Bears were a huge disappointment ending the season at 8-8, falling well below their projected win total. So, where does this group land?

The Bears went from a top-10 scoring team in 2018 to near the bottom of the rankings last season. Trubisky regressed in his development and the team is stuck with him for at least another year. Trubisky ended up throwing for 3,138 yards and 17 touchdowns while completing over 63 percent of his passes, but the Bears ranked 29th in both total offense and points per game. The creativity that Nagy infused in 2018 was non-existent last season.

In order to have a winning season the offense needs to be better. Nine times the Bears scored less than 20 points and their 17.5 average was around nine points per game fewer than in 2018. In an effort to ignite Trubisky, the Bears swung a deal for former Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles. The hope is one of those guys steps up to lead the troops.

2020 Chicago Bears Defense Preview

There doesn’t appear to be anything wrong on this side of the football. Despite the switch in coordinators the defense was splendid in 2019 under Chuck Pagano, allowing them to finish with a .500 record. There was some regression in the numbers but the group still ranked eighth in yards allowed while surrendering the fourth-fewest points in the NFL.

The Bears are counting on having a few key players back after injuries last season. Akiem Hicks played just five games, Danny Trevathan appeared in nine and Roquan Smith played in 12. Having them back, along with the acquisitions of Robert Quinn and Artie Burns, makes the group stronger. Oh, and they have mega-disruptor Khalil Mack in the prime of his career. The former defensive player of the year registered 8.5 sacks, the fewest since his rookie season, showing the unit doesn’t need to rely on him.

Speaking of sacks that’s one area the Bears can be better. They collected only 32 last year to finish 24th. Quinn led Dallas with 11.5 sacks last year and collected 26.5 sacks over the last three seasons. The group figures to be just as stingy in 2020 with the ability to steal a few games along the way helping the win total.

2020 Chicago Bears Schedule Analysis

There is plenty of optimism throughout the NFC North since there doesn’t appear to be a dominant team. Green Bay ran away with the crown last year and Minnesota won 10 games reaching the playoffs. Both of those teams are in a state of flux heading into 2020. The Bears swept Detroit and Minnesota going 4-2 against their division foes. A similar record is a necessity to have a winning season and contend for a division title.

The first part of the slate looks promising with games against the Lions, Giants and Falcons. The middle of the schedule starting in Week 8 looks to be the toughest. Home games against New Orleans and Minnesota are sandwiched around a road tilt at Tennessee right before the Week 11 bye. Following the bye it’s off to Green Bay with a home game against Deshaun Watson and Houston in Week 14, in what’s sure to be a reminder for fans of what could have been.

I’m not giving up on the Bears just yet. They didn’t make any major moves but a number of under the radar deals should improve the overall outlook. And Trubisky did show flashes of being a solid quarterback in 2018. The key is opening the playbook and new coordinator Bill Lazor has some pieces to work with. The slightest improvement offensively makes all the difference for this club with a defense that can shut opponents down. I like the Bears to not only exceed their projected win total but also contend for the NFC North crown.
