Two straight 7-9 seasons do not inspire a lot of confidence. But, if ever that kind of finish has a positive feel last year was it for the Atlanta Falcons. With Dan Quinn’s job on the line following a 1-7 start the Falcons regrouped to close 2019 with six wins in the last eight games. They addressed some problems this offseason, especially on defense, and have a prolific duo in Matt Ryan and Julio Jones to put up points. The NFC South took a swing with developments in Tampa and the Falcons aren’t getting much respect. Oddsmakers have their win total at 7.5 and a difficult schedule could prevent them from exceeding that number.

2020 Atlanta Falcons Offense Preview

Just a few years ago the Falcons had the top scoring team in the NFL. That group, led by Ryan and Jones, reached the Super Bowl only to have an epic collapse. They’ve been good in three seasons since, just not great. Last year the Falcons ranked fifth in total offense with 380 yards per game, but the group was wildly one-sided. They had a hard time running the football mustering only 85.1 yards on the ground.

In an effort to rectify that problem Todd Gurley was brought in after being let go by the Rams. With no backup plan yet, the Falcons are hoping a return home brings back the Gurley that dominated the league a few seasons ago. In 2017 and 2018 Gurley ran for 2,556 yards with 30 touchdowns. Anything in the run game will certainly help.

The passing game thrived without the threat of a ground attack last year so there’s no reason to think it can’t be among the best again. Ryan had a solid season completing a NFL-high 408 passes for 4,466 yards and 26 touchdowns. He did toss 14 picks and was sacked a league-high tying 48 times. Improvement in those areas will help the 13th ranked scoring offense, though not much was done to upgrade the line.

2020 Atlanta Falcons Defense Preview

Quinn is a defensive guy and with his coaching future at stake some adjustments on that side of the football needed to be made. Last year the Falcons surrendered nearly 356 total yards and 25 points per outing. They haven’t finished better than 20th in any of those categories in the last two seasons.

The draft was heavy on defenders with a few potential starters in the early rounds. First pick A.J. Terrell has a good chance to start at one corner to improve a pass defense that allowed 244.9 yards to rank 22nd. The group was hung out to dry due to a feeble pass rush. The Falcons collected 28 sacks to finish above only Miami. The addition of Dante Fowler Jr. should help in that area. Fowler had 11.5 sacks with the Rams last season.

The key to a successful defense rests up front. Second round pick Marlon Davidson will team with Grady Jarrett in what should be improved line. There are caveats, though. Relying on rookies is a risk and there isn’t much in terms of depth. Avoiding injuries at the key position will go a long way to having an improved season.

2020 Atlanta Falcons Schedule Analysis

Only one NFC South team finished above .500 last season with the Saints running away from the pack. New Orleans is the favorite again and Tom Brady makes Tampa an instant contender. So beating the rebuilding Carolina Panthers in both meetings is almost a necessity to finish at .500 or better. The opening stretch is rough with games against Seattle, Dallas and Green Bay in the first four weeks.

The closing stretch isn’t easy either. The Falcons get Brady and the Buc twice sandwiched around a game at defending Super Bowl champ Kansas City. To make things a little more interesting at the end of the campaign, Brady has never lost to the Falcons going 6-0, including that comeback win in Super Bowl LI.

Taking a chance on Gurley could backfire. The former Georgia Bulldog wasn’t the same last year after an injury late in the 2018 season limited him in the Rams Super Bowl loss. Ryan and Jones also have some miles on them so there could be a breakdown at some point. Defensively the team made some upgrades and should be improved keeping the Falcons in a number of games. However, I just don’t think they did enough to reach the breakeven point and the schedule is not going to do them any favors.
