NFL Betting – Arizona Cardinals at Dallas Cowboys

There have been some monumental injuries in the NFL this season with none bigger than the season-ender to Dak Prescott. Playing their first game without their leader, the Dallas Cowboys host the Arizona Cardinals on Monday night to conclude Week 6. The Boys added veteran Andy Dalton as a backup during the offseason for this exact reason. Dalton enjoyed several successful years with the Bengals during his career and should help to keep the team on track. It helps that he’s surrounded by playmakers on the league’s top ranked offense. Once Dak went down the early line flipped in favor of the Cards, who are now listed as a 1-point favorite.  Bookmaker offers a generous welcome bonus (max bonus $1600)

Odds Analysis

Nothing can impact a line more than the loss of a starting quarterback. And when that QB is as good as Prescott we get plenty of concerned bettors. Despite their record the Cowboys were positioned as a 3-point favorite on the early line. When Dak’s season ended with a gruesome ankle injury in last week’s game we saw the line quickly jump the fence moving a full six points to Arizona -3. With the shock of the loss behind us we saw the line even out a bit with some buy back on the Cowboys pushing the Cards to -1. Dalton is a capable backup and I don’t anticipate the offense losing too much. Dallas’ defense, however, is a major concern. The Boys cashed the OVER in their last four games giving up an average of 40 points. They are 0-5 ATS after failing to cover the 7-point line against the Giants. We saw the total spike from 52 to its current 55.

The Cards stopped a two-game losing streak with a 30-10 win over the Jets last week. It was a game most expected them to win since they were a touchdown favorite on the closing line, and they delivered with an efficient offensive performance. It was also a pleasant outcome after they dropped the previous two contests to Detroit and Carolina as a favorite. They are 3-2 ATS.

Getting a career-high 380 passing yards from Kyler Murray, the Cards matched their season-high point total. It was a nice bounce back performance after throwing for only 133 yards the week before. And the game showed off Murray’s evolution as a quarterback, which has been helped with the addition of DeAndre Hopkins. Murray completed 75 percent of his passes over the last two games with four touchdowns and he’s nearly 70 percent for the year. He has a completion percentage of at least 65 in every game.

Hopkins leads the NFL with 45 receptions and 528 yards. He caught six balls for 131 yards last week, his third with at least that many yards. He had none last season. Defensively the Cards suffered a blow when Chandler Jones sustained a season-ending injury. Jones had 19 sacks last season and has constantly received double teams this year. Taking his first defensive snaps in place of Jones last week, Dennis Gardeck had a pair of sacks. The group will be tested by Dallas’ potent attack.

Dallas Cowboys

All eyes will be on Dalton to see how he performs in place of Prescott. Taking attention away from the defense is probably a good thing considering how awful the group has been. Dallas gave up 34 points to a Giants team that totaled 47 points in their first four games. New York’s point total last week was the lowest against the Boys in the last four games. Dallas allows a league-worst 36 points per game on the year.

As good as Dak was this season, leading the NFL in passing yards and completions, the offense wasn’t able to overcome the issues on the other side. The Boys needed a late comeback to edge the winless Giants and got a gift from the Falcons to win that Week 2 game. Thankfully they play in the NFL’s worst division and lead the pack with a record of 2-3. Clearly the defense needs to be better and help is on the way with Leighton Vander Esch and Randy Gregory poised for a return. Gregory is eligible to return from suspension next week and Vander Esch is questionable.

Offensively the Cowboys shouldn’t suffer too much with Dalton. Mike McCarthy said he’s not worried citing Dalton’s experience. Taking his first snaps of the season last week he led two field goal drives, including the game-winner, completing 9 of 11 for 111 yards. The concern for McCarthy is the development of now-backup Ben DiNucci. Dallas also signed Garrett Gilbert off Cleveland’s practice squad.

There are a few things working against the Cards that make me hesitant to back them. First, they probably let out a sigh knowing that Dak is out. And second, they’re finishing off a three-game road trip while looking ahead to a home game with Seattle in Week 7. Dalton is a quality backup and the Boys won’t slip much if at all on that side, and that’s enough for me to back the home team.

NFL Score Prediction: Cowboys 34, Cardinals 30
