The NBA gets back to work after its mid-season All-Star break with the race in the Eastern Conference tightening up. Not at the top of the standings rather in the middle, where the Philadelphia 76ers roam. Six games separate five teams in the standings and the Sixers are currently fifth. Considering they have the best home record in the league through the first half it’s important for them to think about a top-four seed and homecourt for at least one round of the playoffs. Philly goes for the sweep of its four-game homestand when hosting the surging Brooklyn Nets Thursday on TNT.

Odds Analysis

The break came at a bad time for the Nets, who were playing good ball with a 7-3 mark in their last 10 outings with wins over Indiana and Toronto. They find themselves in seventh-place in the East, five games clear of Washington for a playoff spot at 25-28. All three losses over the previous 10 games all came away from home and the Nets are just 9-16 SU and 10-15 ATS on the road this season. With the best home record in the Association at 25-2, the Sixers are favored in their 12th consecutive game with Brooklyn, laying 7.5-points on the opening line. Philly has covered two straight and three of the last four, including a 117-106 triumph as a 6.5-point home favorite on Jan. 15.

Brooklyn Nets

Don’t count the Nets out yet. Winners of two straight and seven of 10 before the break, they crept closer to .500 and gained some separation for one of the bottom playoff spots in the East. While they have played better of late, the Nets take a subpar 9-16 road record into the venue that houses the team with the best record on its home floor. Their last three setbacks have all come on the road with two of them to Washington and New York, who have a combined 37 wins at the break.

Brooklyn’s foreseeable future will not have Kyrie Irving in it. He’s out indefinitely after re-injuring a shoulder that shut him down for 26 games earlier in the season. Irving returned from that first injury in the middle of January and averaged over 27 points while scoring at least 45 points in a game twice in nine outings. The Nets have gotten used to not having him around, though, since he’s played in just 20 games.

Others have picked up the slack and will need to continue to do so for possibly the remainder of the season. Spencer Dinwiddie led the Nets in scoring in their three previous games with the Sixers averaging 24.0 points. He leads all healthy players with 21.0 points getting help from Caris LeVert (15.3) and Joe Harris (13.8). The Nets have dropped two straight in four of five in Philly, and it’ll be difficult to get a W without Kyrie.

Philadelphia 76ers

If a season can be both a success and a failure, this is it. The Sixers play like a championship contender on their own floor with a 25-2 record while going 15-12 ATS. They are a complete disaster on the road, though, and their 34-21 overall ledger is seen as underachieving by many. Getting a wrap-around four-game homestand, Philly is looking to build some momentum for a second half surge.

The Sixers won the first three games of the homestand taking down the Clippers right before the break for their 11th straight home success. They are also 8-3 ATS in that span. And with six of their next eight games on the road following this tilt, it would behoove the Sixers to get a victory.

Getting Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons to play nice would help the Sixers’ cause. There has been friction all season, partly due to the team’s struggles. The two were instrumental in the win over the Clips with Simmons totaling 26 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists while Embiid had 26 points and nine boards. “It’s arguably the best game those two have paired up with since I’ve been here,” Brett Brown said of his two stars.

The Nets were playing good ball ahead of the break knocking off Toronto and Indiana, two of the top teams in the East. But they’ve been inconsistent and lack scoring with Irving on the shelf. Dinwiddie is a fine player but he’s not a go-to guy, and the absence of Kyrie will affect the offense. For whatever reason the Sixers are just beastly at home and they’re healthy with the return of Josh Richardson. They have too many weapons for the Nets to contain.

NBA Score Prediction: Philadelphia 115, Brooklyn 103
