Could this be a preview of the NBA Finals? If it is it’s in name only since several key players will be on the shelf when the Brooklyn Nets take on the Los Angeles Lakers on Thursday night in the second game of a TNT doubleheader. The Nets are expected to be without leading scorer Kevin Durant while the Lakers will likely finish the first half without Anthony Davis. The Nets have won a season-high four straight games taking the first three of their five-game road trip to move within a game of the top spot in the Eastern Conference. They are 11-6 since acquiring James Harden last month.  Bookmaker.eu offers a generous CASH welcome bonus (max bonus $1600)

Odds Analysis

Playing without Durant and Kyrie Irving, the Nets were catching 8-points against Phoenix in their last game. Showing the makeup of a true contender, the team battled back from 24 points down to win 128-124, their fourth straight triumph. If you thought they were all about the big three think again. The Nets matched their season-high win streak going 4-0 ATS. Since swinging the deal for Harden the Nets are 11-6 SU and 8-9 ATS. They are now 7-7 SU and 6-8 ATS on the road. In their first game without AD, the Lakers responded from a loss to Denver by taking down Minnesota 112-104 for their eighth win in nine games. They are just 4-5 ATS in that stretch. The Lakers have the second-best record in the NBA behind Utah at 22-7 SU and 14-15 ATS.

Brooklyn Nets

The big three have been on the court together in just seven of the 17 games since the Harden deal. That hasn’t prevented the Nets from putting a little run together, though. It would be nice for Steve Nash to have Durant, Harden and Irving all playing together since that’s why the club gave plenty to Houston in the deal. And it will probably work out that way later in the season. But the Nets are proving that they have depth.

Having two or even just one of the three players available is a boost. On Tuesday Harden was the last man standing powering the Nets to a monster comeback against a good Suns squad. Harden scored 38 points on 14 of 22 shooting with 11 assists and seven rebounds as the Nets overcame a 24-point deficit to win 128-124. Joe Harris added 22 points and the bench chipped in 40 points. The Nets hit 20 of 40 triples and shot 57.3 percent from the floor to cash the OVER for the 14th time in 17 games since Harden joined the squad.

Heading to LA on the back end of the road trip, the Nets will be without Durant due to a hamstring injury. Irving is questionable after sitting out the Phoenix contest with a sore back. The offense has been humming leading the NBA with an average of 121.7 points. And with no AD to go against we could expect more points from the Nets on Thursday.

Los Angeles Lakers

Their early season success in the win column and on the stat sheet was difficult to maintain. We’ve seen the Lakers slip slightly over the past few weeks and their defense will be hindered by the absence of Davis. But don’t expect them to cave without AD. The Lakers strengthened their bench during the offseason expecting depth to play a pivotal role in the COVID-marred season. And AD’s injury history likely had something to do with that.

“We’re not expecting one person to try to pick up AD’s productivity. Nobody’s going to be able to do that. He just brings too much to the table. But we all can do more,” LeBron James said. James did his part in the win over Minnesota with 30 points, 13 rebounds and seven assists. James has played every game this season averaging 25.7 points, 7.9 assists and 8.2 rebounds.

Marc Gasol, Kyle Kuzma and Montrezl Harrell will get more minutes in AD’s absence. Harrell had a big game off the bench scoring 17 points while playing stellar defense against Wolves big man Karl-Anthony Towns. Gasol played a season-high 30 minutes scoring 11 points. In the end it will come down to LeBron carrying the Lakers, and they will survive since James is playing at another level.

Some big names will be absent, but that doesn’t lessen the interest in this one. The Nets are surging despite limited contributions from Durant and Irving. The Lakers have perhaps the deepest bench in the NBA and it will be tested. They’ve been up to the challenge so far, and LA has found its groove at home, which is the deciding factor in this one.

NBA Score Prediction: Lakers 121, Nets 117
