Showing that the same drivers don’t always win on the NASCAR Cup Series circuit, Cole Custer broke the seal last week for his first career victory. Oddsmakers aren’t very high on the rookie getting a second straight win putting him well down the opening odds list for the O’Reilly Auto Parts 500. Instead we see the same names taking over the top of the list with four-time winner Kevin Harvick leading the way.   Bookmaker is offering a generous welcome bonus with a maximum of $1000

Harvick and Denny Hamlin, who each have a season-high four Cup Series wins, won the last two races at Texas Motor Speedway. Harvick captured the AAA Texas 500 last November with Hamlin taking the checkered flag at last year’s O’Reilly Auto Parts 500. Hamlin hit the board as the second favorite along with Kyle Busch. In fact, those three drivers have combined to win the last five Cup Series races at Texas with Harvick owning three of them. NASCAR Cup Series O’Reilly Auto Parts 500

Date and Time: Sunday, July 19, 2020, 3 p.m. ET

Location: Texas Motor Speedway, Fort Worth, TX

O’Reilly Auto Parts 500 TV Coverage: NBCSN

Custer surprised everyone last week becoming the first rookie in four years to win a Cup Series race. He pulled off a daring wide pass on the final lap to finish .271 seconds ahead of Martin Truex Jr. Custer led for a total of five laps, four early in the race and the all-important final one. It’s the first time all season he set the pace.

Texas Motor Speedway typically hosts two races a season but neither of them takes place during the sweltering heat in the middle of July. Thanks to COVID everyone has to make adjustments and racing in the daytime Texas heat will be one of them. This race had been scheduled in late March/early April since it hit the schedule in 1997. As part of the NASCAR playoffs, the Texas 500 runs later in the year. It’ll be interesting to see how the track plays compared to the other times of the year.

Harvick has never won this race. He has, however, won the fall event three years running. A look at his history on the 1.5-mile quad-oval makes it easy to see why he’s the betting favorite. On top of the three wins he has a trio of second-place finishes among his eight top-5s in his last 11 runs on this track.

Kyle Busch continues to show up at the top of the odds board despite his season-long win drought. Kyle has just one win in his last 38 starts so I think it’s safe to say there’s more going on than just a slump. What makes his situation more strenuous is that the one win came in last season’s championship race. That Cup Series win deflected what would certainly be a lot more criticism coming his way.

O’Reilly Auto Parts 500 Preview

KyBusch, Hamlin and Harvick each have three Cup Series wins at Texas trailing only Jimmie Johnson, who owns the record with seven checkered flags. JJ’s last win came at this race in 2017 and he’s currently riding a 111 race winless streak. He ran 18th last week and hasn’t finished better than 10th in his last six starts.

The real stunner is KyBusch, who continues to slog along without a hint that he’s ready to visit the winner’s circle. The reigning Cup Series champion ran 21st last week adding to the misery of a horrible season. He has won a few times on the truck series so we know he still has the goods, but he’s just too risky at his current price.

Picking an outright winner in any race is difficult. The best drivers in the world in the fastest cars while coming within inches of each other means anything can happen. There really is no distinction from the favorite to halfway down the odds chart. Johnson is the sentimental pick since he’s retiring and would like nothing better than to end that winless skid. KyBusch and his team haven’t suddenly become awful. You expect him to get a win soon.

O’Reilly Auto Parts 500 at BookMaker

All drivers below the playoff cut line have work to do as the season winds down. The first three out include Austin Dillon, Tyler Reddick and Erik Jones. Of them Jones has the best resume and like we saw last week anything can happen. I’m more inclined to go with Jones in an alternate market, though. Harvick has won three of the last five races on this track but never this particular event. And racing Texas in July is something no driver has encountered.

O’Reilly Auto Parts 500 Odds Pick: Jimmie Johnson
