Charlotte will make its debut in 2022 while Sacramento and St. Louis will begin play a year later.

The decision to delay the inaugural seasons of the three teams was driven primarily by the league, according to ESPN.

The final decision was made by MLS Commissioner Don Garber in conjunction with the league's Expansion Committee, and it all relates to Covid-19.

"We have always taken a thoughtful and strategic approach to our expansion planning and have delivered successful launches for every new club," said Garber in a prepared statement. "It is important for each club to take the necessary time to launch their inaugural MLS seasons the way their fans and communities deserve. With the extra year to make up for what has been a challenging 2020, these teams will be well-positioned for their debuts and for long-term success."

Veteran outfielder Yasiel Puig said Friday that he has tested positive for COVID-19 but is asymptomatic.

Sources told ESPN earlier this week that Puig, a free agent, had agreed to a deal with the Braves. However, the deal had been contingent on Puig testing negative, so that agreement is now off and he remains a free agent, a source told ESPN, confirming multiple reports.

"I will be quarantined until I receive two negative test results, which I hope will arrive shortly," the 29-year-old said.
