  • Team has long +10000 odds of winning the World Series

  • Team still has franchise cornerstones in Buster Posey, Brandon Crawford and Brandon Belt to lean on

There are teams out there that could benefit from a shortened season – the San Francisco Giants aren’t one of them. If there are fewer games the number of losses won’t be so high, so I guess that’s a positive. In other words, don’t expect much from them in 2020, and the odds reflect just how bad it could be. Parting with star hurler Madison Bumgarner was a sign of the team’s intentions. They are clearly in a rebuild mode while holding onto a few pieces from the glory days of not so long ago.

2020 San Francisco Giants Overview
The most significant change with the Giants, other than letting MadBum walk, is the retirement of Bruce Bochy. The two helped lead the Giants to three World Series titles between 2010 and 2014. Those days are a distant memory now with the team in a state of transition. Former Phillies manager Gabe Kapler has the unenviable task of following in Bochy’s footsteps.

He has franchise cornerstones in Buster Posey, Brandon Crawford and Brandon Belt to lean on. Unfortunately those three are on the downside of their careers. The minor league system has improved over the years and we’ll likely see just how much as the season progresses.

The Giants are in a weird situation. With the leftovers they are probably too good to lose 100 games. However, they aren’t good enough to contend for anything, except staying out of the basement in the NL West. At some point management will have to go all in on a rebuild. That time could come sooner rather than later. The hope is that some of the veterans are productive enough to get value in a deal, depending on how the trade market works. Otherwise the Giants are just spinning their wheels.

Pitching

Not a strong point last season the staff got weaker with the departure of Bumgarner and closer Will Smith. The Giants posted a 4.38 ERA and starters ranked 23rd in strikeout rate. The loss of Bumgarner could be offset by the return of Johnny Cueto, who missed nearly all of 2019. And at 34 his better days might be behind him. Jeff Samardzija projects as the staff ace. He went 11-12 with a 3.52 ERA over 32 starts in 2019. But since becoming a full-time starter nine seasons ago he’s had exactly one winning campaign.

The top of the rotation is serviceable if Cueto can bounce back from Tommy John surgery. He threw 16 innings with the Giants following a rehab stint in the minors. The rest of the rotation is up for grabs. Kevin Gausman, Drew Smyly and Trevor Cahill were all brought in after awful seasons a year ago. The Giants desperately need at least one of them turn things around. Hot prospect Logan Webb should get a good look as he auditions for a future spot in the rotation.

If you want to know what a bullpen by committee looks like just watch the Giants in 2020. Smith won six games and saved 34 for a team that went 77-85. His loss might be bigger than MadBum’s. Tony Watson will likely get first crack at closing games but expect Kapler to mix and match in an attempt to win a few games.

Hitting

While the staff wasn’t great last year, the offense was awful. The Giants finished in the bottom four in batting average, runs, on-base and slugging percentage. Only four teams in MLB hit fewer than their 167 homers. Bringing the fences in at Oracle Park probably won’t help. The veterans need to pick up the pace in order to be competitive. Posey hit a career-low .257, worse than his previous low of .284 in 2018. Never a huge power guy, Posey had just seven homers last year and has 12 combined in the last two seasons.

Belt also struggled, hitting .234, and Crawford finished at .228. Evan Longoria overcame a slow start to 2019 to hit .254 with 20 homers. The biggest surprise was Mike Yastrzemski, who led the team with 21 homers while hitting .272. Never projected to be more than a bench player, Yaz killed it. But can we expect another season like he just had. The Giants will platoon at a number of positions mixing in their younger players to get seasoning. Even if the older players improve their numbers it’s not going to make much of a difference.

2020 San Francisco Giants Season Pick

Stay as far away from the Giants as you can. As an outsider it’s hard to see a plan for the future. Three straight losing seasons and the veteran core remains. They aren’t getting younger and the numbers have fallen hard. Management did very little this offseason so you can expect the Giants to battle for the basement in the NL West.
