The surprising Rays are hanging around just a half game behind the Bombers thanks to the best pitching staff in MLB. That group will be tested as the Yankees lineup will have a different look. AL home run leader Edwin Encarnacion is expected to play on Monday after being acquired from Seattle. The game can be seen on MLB Network with wagering options at BookMaker.eu.

Odds Analysis

The Rays are a surprise just because they’re the Rays. They don’t have big name players and they don’t spend a lot of money, so they shouldn’t be good, right? Wrong, the success they’ve enjoyed this year comes on the heels of an improbable 90-win season in 2018, so Kevin Cash is doing something right down there. One of the many things the Rays have done well this year is win on the road. Their 23 away victories are the second-most and their .697 winning percentage is tops in MLB.

A recent stretch where the Yankees won just three times in 11 games opened the door for the Rays to climb back to the top of the division. New York said enough is enough and put an emphatic end to that run by stomping the White Sox in the last two games of their weekend series. The Yanks outscored Chicago 18-7 in those games and they added more firepower to an offense that scores 5.4 runs per game. Encarnacion, who’s belted 21 home runs, is expected to be in the lineup Monday. He’ll be joined over the coming days by Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge, giving the Yanks some pop in the middle of the order.

Probable Pitchers

The Rays always seem to find pitchers who fly under the radar and put together solid campaigns. Making things happen this year is Yonny Chirinos ( 7-2, 2.88 ERA ), who takes the ball every fifth day whether he’s starting or not. He has slipped into a starters role and ranks among AL leaders in wins, ERA and WHIP. His recent work is his best since joining the club last year.

Chirinos allowed two runs on seven hits over 6.0 innings his last time out, which came after a masterful performance in Boston when he tossed 8.0 shutout innings surrendering just two hits. In eight total starts this season he is 4-2 with a 2.36 ERA. Chirinos is making his third appearance against the Yankees going 1-0 with a record and 2.08 ERA.

A recent rough patch at least had a positive ending for Masahiro Tanaka ( 4-5, 3.58 ERA ), who snapped a four-start winless streak by beating the Mets last Tuesday. He allowed four earned runs for the third consecutive outing pitching into the seventh inning with solid support from his offense. The Yankees put up a 12-spot to get Tanaka just his second win in about two months. The righty has been strong completing six innings in each of his last seven starts.

Tanaka’s best outing of the year came against the Rays on May 18 when he allowed just three hits with six strikeouts over 6.0 shutout innings. He tossed 7.0 innings of one-run ball in Tampa the start before. Over 13 frames against the Rays Tanaka has given up eight hits and one run with 13 strikeouts and zero walks.

Player to Watch

The Bronx Bombers will soon be living up to their name and its starts Monday with Encarnacion likely penciled in as the team’s DH. The AL’s home run leader joins a team that has left the yard in 19 consecutive games and has blasted 111 for the season. Encarnacion has one more home run than new teammate Gary Sanchez. It’s been all or nothing for Encarnacion in his career against the Rays. He’s homered 27 times against them but has just a .209 average. He’s never faced Chirinos.

Bet Rays at Yankees at BookMaker.eu

The Yankees are starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Surviving for months with a number of key players on the shelf, they hold a slight edge in the division standings with Stanton and Judge expected back this week. And they have an important homestand that begins against the Rays. New York has won four of the first six games against their AL East rival and Tanaka’s two best outings this season were against Tampa. It’s hard to go against the Bombers, who are ready to put some separation at the top of the division.

MLB Score Prediction: Yankees 6, Rays 3
