The Houston Astros are getting some of their wounded players back in the lineup and they’re looking a lot like the team many predicted to be a World Series contender.

It doesn’t seem to matter who’s playing when the Stros play division rival Oakland. Houston extended its overall winning streak to six and beat the Athletics for the eighth time in nine meetings with an 11-1 romp in the opener of this critical three-game set. The A’s will send no-hit man Mike Fiers to the mound Tuesday as they look to even the series. Houston will counter with Wade Miley in a game that can be seen on MLB Network. Odds Analysis

If the A’s had more success against the Astros the race in the AL West would be much tighter. Oakland tried to make the race more interesting by winning 16 of 20 games. However, two straight losses have the Athletics 7.5-games off the pace. While there is a chance of making a run for the division crown, the A’s have to contend with several other teams vying for a wild card spot. Oakland currently owns the second wild card with Tampa and Boston close behind.

With several key players out with injuries, the Astros did more than just tread water. Monday’s return of Aledmys Diaz has Houston as close to being a full squad as it’s been in two months. Barring further injuries, the circle will be complete later this week when Carlos Correa returns. In the meantime, the Astros just keep winning, improving to a season-best 28 games over .500 with a six-game winning streak. Over that span they’ve outscored opponents 43-12.

Probable Pitchers

Since tossing a no-hitter back on May 7, Mike Fiers ( 9-3, 3.64 ERA ) has been unbeatable. No, really. He hasn’t lost a game since the start before the no-no going 7-0 with a 2.25 ERA while holding opponents to a .197 batting average. That game turned the season around for the 34-year-old righty, who was 2-3 with a 6.81 ERA before holding the Reds hitless. Fiers was denied a win in his last outing when the pen couldn’t hold a lead, but he owns the second-best ERA among AL starters since the end of April.

Fiers has had difficulties against his former club. His worst outing of the season took place in Houston on April 7 when he allowed six runs on seven hits in 1.2 innings. Overall, he’s 1-2 with a 6.15 ERA in five career starts against the Astros.

Acquired in the offseason to eat innings, Wade Miley ( 8-4, 3.25 ERA ) has emerged as a solid No. 3 starter. He allowed three hits and one earned run over 5.1 innings to beat the Angels in his last start and he is 3-1 with a 2.97 ERA over his last seven outings with a .189 BAA in that span.

Miley tossed 5.2 shutout innings to beat the A’s at home in early April. He was the tough-luck loser 11 days later when Matt Chapman’s solo homer dealt him a 2-1 loss. In seven career starts against the A’s, Miley is 5-2 with a 1.61 ERA.

Player to Watch

Houston has outscored Oakland 53-21 while winning eight of nine games in the season series. A good chunk of the punishment has been administered by Yuli Gurriel, who went 3 for 3 on Monday with his 19th homer and three RBIs to lead the onslaught. And it’s been a constant this season. Gurriel has hit safely in seven of the eight games he’s played against the A’s and is 16 for 32 with six RBIs and a 1.248 OPS. It doesn’t matter who the A’s put on the hill, they can’t stop Gurriel, who has a .361 combined average against Oakland’s current staff.

The A’s are a good team, which makes Houston’s mastery over them even more perplexing. Things are likely to get worse for Oakland now that the Astros are getting some important pieces back in the lineup. Fiers has been on fire since his no-hitter, but his numbers against the Astros haven’t been good and he was roughed up in two earlier starts against them. Those came before the transformation, however. The odds are stacked against Houston continuing their dominance, but Miley has been solid, especially at home, and I like him to silence Oakland’s bats.

MLB Score Prediction: Astros 5, A’s 2
