It’s another week and there’s another different team at the top of the SEC standings. The Kentucky Wildcats took over sole possession of the top spot thanks to losses by LSU and Auburn over the weekend. The Wildcats have won four in a row and eight of their last nine as they get ready for March. The Tigers, meanwhile, have been in a tailspin lately losing their grip on first place by dropping three of their last four games. They can create more chaos at the top of the standings by beating UK Tuesday in the only regular season meeting between the clubs.  CLAIM YOUR WELCOME BONUS - MAXIMUM $1000

Odds Analysis

They may be going through a little funk right now but the LSU Tigers are getting some respect from oddsmakers, who pegged them as a 2.5-point favorite on the opening line. Kentucky didn’t play its best in a 67-62 win over Ole Miss on Saturday, but they were good enough to beat a lesser opponent. UK extended its winning streak to four but suffered its first ATS loss in four games. The Cats also reached the 20-win mark on Saturday improving to 20-5 SU and 12-13 ATS. Starting SEC play with eight straight wins put the defending regular season champs in a good spot. But with the league top-heavy any slump could be harmful. LSU fell a full game off the pace with Saturday’s loss falling to 18-7 SU.

Kentucky Wildcats

While the other top teams in the conference were getting upset over the weekend, the Wildcats stayed the course and escaped with a narrow 67-62 win over Ole Miss as a 10-point home favorite. They didn’t cover the spread, but they did win the game and at this point it’s all about winning. It’s actually always about winning, but you know what I mean.

Coach Cal constantly preaches for his teams to get progressively better over the course of a season so they’re playing their best basketball when March rolls around. Saturday’s game against Ole Miss wasn’t aesthetically pleasing, which may have pissed Calipari off, but the result was exactly what Kentucky wanted to move back to the top of the heap in the SEC. The Cats somehow won the game by shooting 39 percent from the floor and nine percent – NINE PERCENT – from three-point range. The Cats persevered to win a game where the lead changed nine times in the final five minutes.

“It shows that we have a winning mentality, a will to win. I wasn’t my best in the first half and in the post. I wasn’t really my best the entire game, but we still came out and found a way to win,” said Nick Richards, who hit the go-ahead free throws in the final minutes as part of his 16 points. They have won 20 of 25 games so the Cats are obviously doing something right. But this isn’t one of Coach Cal’s dominating clubs. They are efficient on both ends of the floor, but they lack depth.

LSU Tigers

It’s been quite a drastic change of events for the Tigers, who not too long along ago appeared to be in the driver’s seat for a repeat regular season crown. However, something happened on the way to get those rings measured. A 10-game winning streak that included eight SEC tilts put the Tigers at the top of the heap As soon as they got there they were removed. The current slide started with a loss at Vanderbilt on Feb. 5 when the Tigers were favored by 11.5 points. Maybe the Tigers were looking beyond Vandy to their showdown with Auburn.

That game didn’t go well either with LSU suffering a 91-90 overtime loss to Auburn. “We probably weren’t as good as the 10-game winning streak, and were not as bad as we look now,” LSU coach Will Wade said. And he’s exactly right. But they better start playing better if they want to tie for the league lead or take over first-place. The recent toe stub also knocked LSU out of the national rankings casting a dark shadow over the chances to reach the NCAA Tournament.

One thing likely to get the Tigers to the dance is their offense. They’ve scored at least 80 points in six of their last 10 games and they drop an average of 80.8 points per game to rank in the top-10 nationally. Defense is another story and will keep LSU out of the dance or force them to an early departure if they can‘t rebound the basketball better.

In a game where points should flow freely the total looks like it could be in danger from the OVER. Both teams prefer to play offense and they’ve both been quite good. All of a sudden there is pressure on LSU to win, not just for their SEC lives but for their national well being. Having Pistol Pete behind them for this matchup is enough to lift LSU to a cover.

College Basketball Score Prediction: LSU 79, Kentucky 75

How does that saying go about playing with fire and getting burned? Well, that’s just what the Denver Nuggets are doing in the Western Conference finals against the Los Angeles Lakers. Maybe the Nuggets need to fall behind three games to one in the series since that’s when they play their best. If they want to do that, though, they need to win Game 3 on Tuesday night since no team in the history of the league has overcome a 3-0 series deficit. The Nuggets aren’t going to quit and neither is LeBron and Co. They got a dagger triple from Anthony Davis at the horn to subdue Denver in Game 2 to take a commanding lead in the series.
