Kentucky Derby Moved to Labor Day Weekend: First Postponement Since WWII

This year's Kentucky Derby is the latest sporting event to be impacted by the coronavirus pandemic.  Organizers have moved the Derby from the first weekend in May to Labor Day Weekend (September 5).  Betting odds will still be readily available at most books, including BetOnline.

Though a number of horse races have been taking place during a global pandemic that has claimed most other sporting events, the Kentucky Derby more than any other horse race perhaps, is heavily reliant on the "Who's Who" in attendance.

Assuming the coronavirus crisis is under control by the end of summer, late August and early September should be a bonanza for the sportsbooks, moreso than any other year.

The Kentucky Derby is typically the most trafficked event outside of the Super Bowl and some marquee UFC and Boxing matches for Gambling911.com.  The move to Labor Day means it will take place at the start of the new Football season and perhaps as the NBA Finals are coming to a close.

The official announcement regarding the 146th Kentucky Derby will be made Tuesday at 9 a.m. via teleconference.

The postponement marks the first time the Derby will not be held on the first Saturday in May since 1945.

It was postponed in June 1945 when the government issued a ban on horse racing due to World War II.

On Sunday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended organizers cancel or postpone events in the U.S. that consist of 50 people or more for the next 8 weeks.

This upcoming weekend's Louisiana Derby will go ahead as planned minus any spectators.  It is among the most critical Kentucky Derby prep races.
