NFL Football Betting: NY Jets Quarterback Situation From Bad to Worse

The Miami Dolphins are likely the worst team in the National Football League but that was known heading into the season.  They were expected to be bad and they definitely haven’t disappointed.  The New York Jets might not be as bad as the Dolphins (yet) but they’re quickly becoming the league’s biggest ‘comedy of errors’.

When we last checked in on the New York Jets starting quarterback Sam Darnold had just been diagnosed with mononucleosis.  No real update on Darnold’s condition though it appears that he’s on the mend.  He returned to the Jets’ team facility on Tuesday for the first time since contracting his illness.  While this is a hopeful sign it’s important to remember that mono hits patients with a ‘double whammy’--after the primary symptoms are over a patient can suffer from some serious residual symptoms.  Fatigue and swollen organs are the most significant and while Darnold is being monitored there’s no timeline for his return.  At this point ‘best case scenario’ is Week 5 against the Dallas Cowboys with ‘worst case scenario’ being closer to 7 or 8 weeks.

Speaking of ‘worst case scenario’--that’s a good way to describe Trevor Siemian’s short tenure as New York Jets’ starting quarterback.  He lasted less than one half before getting hit late and out of the pocket by the Browns’ Myles Garrett who received a ‘roughing the passer’ penalty.  Siemian’s leg twisted awkwardly on the play and he left the game shortly before halftime.  At halftime, he was ruled ‘Out’ for the second half and third stringer Luke Falk took his place.

Falk didn’t do a bad job given the adverse circumstances completing 20 of 25 passes for 198 with no touchdowns and no turnovers.  Falk played college ball at Washington State and drafted in the sixth round of the 2018 draft by the Tennessee Titans.  He spent time with Gase during his tenure with the Miami Dolphins.  He becomes the Jets’ third starter this season making them the first team since 1967 (not counting strike years) to start three different quarterbacks in their first three games.  As for Gase, he’ll be starting his 7th quarterback since 2016 which ties him with Hue Jackson for the most during that stretch.

Making matters worse—the Jets are in disarray offensively and have plenty of injuries at other positions.  Center Ryan Kalil who came out of retirement to play this season has been a disappointment though for now he’s still listed as the starter.  He was replaced by Jonotthan Harrison in the fourth quarter but that likely had to do with the score and not Kalil’s performance.  A bigger problem are injuries and suspensions:  WR Quincy Enuwa and OL Brent Qvale are already on injured reserve and gone for the year, as is linebacker Avery Williamson. Tight end Chris Herndon, linebacker Brandon Copleland are suspended—the first two will be out four games with Copeland out six. Linebacker Jordan Jenkins has been downgraded to 'Out' against the Patriots. DE John Franklin-Myers, linebacker CJ Mosley and linebacker Quinnen Williams are all listed as 'questionable'.

The overall mess is why the Jets are a massive underdog for Sunday’s game against the Patriots at New England.  At BetOnline.ag the Patriots are a -22.5 favorite with the total set at 44.  The Jets’ trainwreck has also hit their futures odds hard--they're now a +3300 choice to win the AFC East, a +8000 choice to win the AFC Championship and a +15000 long shot to win the Super Bowl.
