The defending champion Kansas City Chiefs kick off their title defense against the team they beat in the Divisional Playoff round last January, the Houston Texans. The game will be hard pressed to match up to that thrilling KC comeback win of 51-31 after the Texans led 24-0. The game starts the NFL season on Thursday, September 10 at 8:20 p.m. on NBC.

These teams met twice last year as the Texans won in Kansas City 31-24 in October before the Chiefs took the playoff game 51-31 in January. Houston is 2-1 all-time at Arrowhead Stadium in the regular season but the Chiefs lead the series 7-5 including playoff wins since the Texans joined the NFL in 2002.

Houston Texans Outlook: New Offensive Weapons

Bill O’Brien and the Texans went 10-6 last year and won the AFC South for a second straight season. They beat the Buffalo Bills 22-19 in overtime in the Wild Card round before losing in Kansas City. They finished 13th in the NFL in total yards and 14th in ppg (23.6) while the defense was 19th in ppg (24.1) and 28th in yards allowed.

Gone from the offense are All-Pro WR DeAndre Hopkins and RB Carlos Hyde who ran for 1070 yards in 2019. Superstar QB Deshaun Watson now has RB David Johnson to hand the ball to and WRs Randall Cobb and Brandin Cooks as weapons on the perimeter. The Texans got a team-record seven touchdowns from TE Darren Fells in 2019 and the veteran re-signed with the team in the offseason.

The defense will hope fore a full season from DE J.J. Watt and CB Bradley Roby and they added DT Ross Blacklock and LB Jonathan Greenard in the draft. Jonathan Joseph is gone from the secondary while the Texans now get a full-season from 2019 acquisitions Gareon Conley and Vernon Hargreaves who are both former first-round picks.

Kansas City Chiefs Outlook: Pedal to the Metal

The 2019 season was a dream one for the Chiefs and their fans. Andy Reid’s squad went 12-4 to win the AFC West before thrilling comeback playoff wins over Houston, Tennessee and San Francisco to win their first Super Bowl in 50 years. The offense scored 28.2 ppg, fifth best in the NFL while the defense was seventh best at just 19.3 ppg allowed.

The offense starts and ends with 2018 MVP Patrick Mahomes who missed two games last year and still threw for 4,031 yards and 26 touchdowns while orchestrating the offense. He has most of his weapons back in WR’s Tyreek Hill, Mecole Hardman and Sammy Watkins plus TE Travis Kelce. OL Laurent Dvernay-Tardif and RB Damien Williams opted out of 2020 but the Chiefs drafted former LSU RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire in the first round and shouldn’t miss a beat in the backfield.

Frank Clark and Chris Jones anchor the defensive line after combining for 17 sacks last year and DE Taco Charlton was added through free agency. Tyrann Mathieu leads the secondary coming off a four-interception season and second-round pick Willie Gay should help the linebacking corps.

Houston Texans at Kansas City Chiefs Betting Lines By Scoresandstats.com

Texans spread: +9.5 (-110) Texans money line: +350

Chiefs spread: -9.5 (-110) Chiefs money line: -450

Over/Under: 54.5 (O -110, U -110)

Andy Reid is 6-1 straight-up in season openers with the Chiefs and 5-2 against the spread in those games. He will look to celebrate a new contract with a season-opening win as his team returns 18 starters. While the Texans are the favorite to again winning the AFC South, winning at Arrowhead in week one is a tall task, even without a stadium full of rabid fans.
