Deshaun Watson to Start at Quarterback in Preseason Opener at Jacksonville: Latest Odds

The Cleveland Browns have confirmed that Deshaun Watson will be starting in the preseason game versus Jacksonville on Friday August 9.

Prior to this news, Jacksonville opened as a -1.5 favorite.  By early Thursday afternoon, the Browns were the -1.5 road favorite.

Watson will be serving a suspension for the first six games of the regular season for violating the personal conduct policy.  The action was handed down by disciplinary officer Sue L. Robinson last week.

On Tuesday, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell told reporters that the league is seeking a season-long suspension because the quarterback's actions were "egregious" and "predatory behavior".

Watson has been accused of sexual assault and other inappropriate conduct during massage sessions in civil lawsuits filed by 25 women.

Oddsmakers have shortened the Browns futures odds, believing that Watson will be able to play beginning in Week 7.

On Tuesday, the NFLPA backed off the notion of an injunction that would let Deshaun Watson play in Week One.

Gaming and sports attorney Daniel Wallach says that the "NFLPA must either win the race to the courthouse (this time) or invoke the bad faith exception to the first-filed rule in order to secure a Delaware venue for Deshaun Watson."

Last week Wallach tweeted:

"Any claim of irreparable harm — necessary for a Week One TRO —has already been waived by virtue of the NFLPA’s failure to appeal the 6-game suspension handed down by Sue Robinson. A fait accompli."

He also noted: “While some who should know better continue to insist that Watson’s failure to play in 2021 had nothing to do with his off-field situation, the simple truth is that, if he wasn’t dealing with civil cases and/or criminal investigations, he would have played in 2021.”
