The weekend is coming and with it comes a whole slate of sports. The 2021 NFL Draft continues and the NBA and NHL seasons are nearing their ends. Major League Baseball is beginning to catch steam and the smarter bettor can find value on some early season surprises.

Here is a look at the best bets for this weekend.

Raptors @ Lakers

Toronto is 12th in the East and 2.5 games out of 10th place. They have only won one of their last four games, which isn’t helping their quest for a play-in berth. The Raptors travel to Los Angeles to face the fading Lakers.

L.A. is now fifth in the West and is 1-4 in their last five games. They have been struggling without LeBron James in the lineup. He is out indefinitely. Anthony Davis, who just recently returned to the Lakers lineup, is listed as day-to-day.

Regardless, the Lakers are still one of the best defensive teams in the league. The Raptors rank 13th in defensive efficiency and in their last five wins they have given up more than 106 points just once.

In seven of the Lakers last nine home games, the total has gone Under. When the Lakers and Raptors played earlier this season, L.A. held Toronto to 101 points. This should be another low-scoring affair. Play the Under down to 210.

Lightning @ Red Wings

Reigning Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay heads to Detroit for a two-game weekend series. The Lightning have won four of six so far against the Red Wings, but Detroit has won two of the last three. More importantly, the Red Wings have covered in each of the last four.

While Detroit is one of the weaker teams in the NHL, the Red Wings have the second-best record against the spread (32-19). They can keep games close which is what they have done each of the last four times they played Tampa Bay.

The Lightning have clinched a playoff spot. Look for Tampa Bay to cruise through Sunday’s game. Interesting stat: the Lightning and Red Wings have played three two-game series this season. In the last two, Detroit has won the second game. A look at the NHL betting menu shows a few options for this game.

The Red Wings will be the underdog Sunday. Look to cash in big by backing them on the moneyline.

Giants @ Padres

San Francisco has been one of the early surprises of the 2021 MLB season. The reason why the Giants are at the top of the NL West is pitching. The Giants are second in the majors in total ERA at 2.29.

Ironically, they are second to their opponent this weekend - San Diego. The Padres pitching staff leads MLB in total ERA (2.20). The Padres best pitcher so far has been Joe Musgrove who is 2-0 with a 1.24 ERA and 41 strikeouts.

On Sunday night, Musgrove will battle San Francisco’s Kevin Gausman who is 1-0 with a 2.14 ERA and 34 strikeouts.

With the Padres at home with their best pitcher on the mound, the public is going to go all in on San Diego. This will be the perfect opportunity to jump on a divisional road underdog. The Giants are +176 in the Friday night series opener. Expect similar odds and play the Giants.
