Detroit Red Wings

Odds to win the 2009 Stanley Cup have been posted at Sports Interaction (now offering a 15 percent cash bonus for new accounts through October 15). Gambling911.com will be monitoring NHL odds and offering up picks throughout the season as part of our new expansive hockey content.

The Detroit Redwings are the favorites to win the 2009 Stanley Cup but there are three other teams with single digit odds including the Montreal Canadiens, Pittsburgh Penguins (who made the Final last season) and those San Jose Sharks.

The Montreal Canadiens are certainly looking good with that impressive payout potenial of $750 for every $100 bet.

Carl Lombardi of Melnick & Greco Fantasy Sports had this to say about the Canadiens:

After a disappointing end to the 2007/08 season in a second round playoff loss to the Philadelphia Flyers, the Montreal Canadiens look to rebound this season and build on the positives of last season...look for this to occur. Montreal lost some important parts of the team that had the best record in the Eastern Conference last year but have brought in some new players to fill their role. The loss of third leading scorer Mark Streit to the New York Islanders leaves a gap in scoring as Streit had 13 goals, seven on the power play, while recording 62 points. A second main departure from Montreal was right winger Michael Ryder, who went to another Original Six team, the Boston Bruins, the team Montreal defeated in a tough 7 game series in last season's playoffs.

Even through Montreal lost two main players vital to last season's success, the Canadiens have some new faces for the upcoming season. Alex Tanguay comes over to Montreal from the Calgary Flames. Coming off a bit of a down year, Tanguay brings another scoring threat to the team, look for him to exceed his 58 point season from a year ago. Georges Laraque signed with the team as a free agent early in the free agent signing period having played last season with the Eastern Conference champion Pittsburgh Penguins. He brings a new toughness to the team, and his physical style of play is important to the Canadiens success in a competitive East this season.

The Canadiens may be good this year, but they still have to get past those fierce Red Wings.

Christopher Edelen, Associated Content writes of the Red Wings. It's no surprise that the Stanley Cup Champion Detroit Red Wings know how to win. Not only are they constantly prepared for the long Stanley Cup run every year, they have some of the best scouting of any team in the NHL. Some of Detroit's star players slipped through the cracks of other teams' radar, and Detroit was there to pick them up. For example, Henrik Zetterberg, this years' MVP in the playoffs, was selected in the seventh round of the NHL Entry Draft. Similarly, star centermen Pavel Datsyuk was selected in the sixth round, with veterans Chris Osgood and Nicklas Lidstrom selected in the third round. It's no doubt that Detroit knows what they're doing when it comes to selecting great players for the future, and this year is no different. Detroit has assembled a nice crop of youngsters who may compete for a spot on this year's roster.
