NFL Betting – Baltimore Ravens Win Total

Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens proved they can dominate the regular season. Doing the same in the playoffs has been a different story. Winning their last 12 games to finish with an NFL-best 14-2 record last year, the Ravens floundered in the postseason losing their divisional round matchup to the underdog Titans, a second straight playoff flameout. The nucleus of that team remains intact and an improved AFC North will require them to be on top of their game. The Ravens easily went over their projected win total last season and they are at the top of the food chain in 2020 with a total of 11.5.

2020 Baltimore Ravens Offense Preview

Midway through the 2018 season John Harbaugh turned the offense over to Jackson. He led the Ravens to six wins in seven starts, but flopped in a playoff loss to the Chargers. Not sure what to expect from the dynamic performer when 2019 started, Jackson continued to run wild while also becoming a capable passer. The team certainly got more than it expected as Jackson ran away with the league’s MVP.

The exploits of Jackson in the passing game were overshadowed by the punishing ground attack. The Ravens led the NFL – by a lot – with an average of 206 yards per game. San Francisco ranked second with 144.1 yards per game. Jackson set a record for quarterbacks and placed sixth in the entire league with 1,206 yards. He had help from Mark Ingram, who scampered for 1,018 yards, and Gus Edwards. Second-round pick J.K. Dobbins figures to be in the mix this year.

When he needed to throw Jackson was effective completing 66.1 percent for 3,127 yards and 36 touchdowns with only six picks. The issue is that he didn’t throw that much with a stellar ground game. The Ravens played with a lead over 60 percent of the time last year and were able to burn the clock by running the football. Look for more balance in the offense with closer games expected this season.

2020 Baltimore Ravens Defense Preview

Playing defense is always something the Ravens have been good at and last year was no different. They ranked fourth allowing just a tick over 300 yards per game while yielding the third-fewest points. And they did the damage without a consistent pass rush. In order to address those issues they were busy in the offseason.

Baltimore managed 37 sacks to finish 21st with 9.5 of those coming from Matt Judon. The linebacker was franchised and he got some help with the additions of Calais Campbell and Matthew Wolfe. Because the base package didn’t apply pressure, the Ravens had the highest blitz rate in the NFL. Campbell posted 31.5 sacks for Jacksonville over the last three seasons.

Additional help was delivered through the draft with first-round pick Patrick McQueen expected to jump into a starting role after winning a national championship at LSU. As good as the secondary was last year without the help of a pass rush, the group is likely to reap the benefits. The backfield accounted for 11 of the 13 picks with corners Marlon Humphrey and Marcus Peters leading the way with three each.

2020 Baltimore Ravens Schedule Analysis

Based on last year’s records the Ravens have the easiest schedule. Jackson admitted his club underestimated Tennessee in last season’s playoff loss, so maybe the gang learned something. We know that records from a season ago mean absolutely nothing, another reason for the Ravens not to be overconfident. They will, however, be playing with a chip on their shoulder after tip-toeing through the playoffs the last two seasons.

The most anticipated matchup of the season takes place in Week 3 when the defending champion Chiefs visit in what could be an AFC Championship preview. The AFC North should be more competitive with Ben Roethlisberger back for the Steelers and the Browns looking to make up for last year’s disaster. Heck, even Cincinnati is expected to be better with No. 1 overall pick Joe Burrow at QB. If things look bleak at the final quarter of the season, don’t be too worried. The Ravens finish against Cleveland, Jacksonville, the Giants and Cincinnati.

Acquiring Campbell and Wolfe addressed the biggest team need on the defensive line. The draft has to be considered a success with the top four picks expected to contribute immediately. And there were few departures meaning the Ravens are in for another strong year. Jackson may not be as electrifying, but he knows how to win – at least in the regular season. He is 19-3 in his career as a starter. I looked for reasons to take the under on the win total and just couldn’t find any.
