McIlroy Win at British Open Pays Big for Dad

Rory McIlroy has won the 2014 British Open….and so too has his dad.

McIlroy’s dad Gerry and three of his friends placed a 400 pound bet (equivalent to US$170.87) on the then-15-year-old winning a British Open Championship by the age of 26.  An undisclosed bookie took the bet at 500/1 odds.

The payout?

200,000 pounds (approximately US$341,730).

Ironically, McIlroy turned 25 years old today.

In the record book, McIlroy is listed behind Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods  as the youngest to get three legs of the career Grand Slam.

"I'm immensely proud of myself," McIlroy said after his two-shot victory Sunday that was never really in doubt. "To sit here, 25 years of age, and win my third major championship and be three-quarters of the way to a career Grand Slam ... yeah, I never dreamed of being at this point in my career so quickly."

For those backing McIlroy early in this year’s British Open, the payout was around 14-1.
