2009 British Open betting odds have been posted with the event set to begin Thursday July 16.  The British Open is one of the most bet on events in the United Kingdom and also attracts a fair amount of betting in the U.S. and Canada.

Not surprising, Tiger Woods is favored to win the 2009 British Open bet the payout would still result in a $200 profit for every $100 bet at BetUS.com.

Meanwhile, Padraig Harrington, who has won two consecutive British Opens, is starting to gain some respect from oddsmakers who have been skeptical thus far over his poor form in recent golf tournaments.

Harrington had 2009 British Open betting odds set at +1200 for a payout potential of $1200 on every $100 bet.

Harrington carried a four stroke lead into Saturday's final round of the Ladbrokes.com Irish Professional Championship at the European Club.

He still seemed doubtful about his form:

"I didn't play very well but I managed my game pretty well and there were a few shots that I hit well," he mused. "My timing was off a little but that can change in 24 hours and I'm happy enough that the short game is pretty strong. I feel I'm getting closer, there's no doubt about that, but there's a question of urgency as well.

"I'm good for preparing for majors and getting my game to peak but I've failed miserably at that for next week. I wouldn't always have so much up in the air and that does worry me. It makes for a much more stressful three or four days going into the Open whereas if you have done your preparation correctly, you're just winding down and I don't have that luxury.

"I spent a long time on the range yesterday trying to put things right and trying to figure out whether this was a physical or mental thing. I came to the conclusion it was actually mental. I tried every conceivable cure and none of them were really working so I'll be looking forward to meeting Bob Rotella (his mind coach) next week. I would have gone into my majors three or four years ago like this, not knowing what's going to turn up, and I'm certainly not easing myself into next week."

Sergio Garcia pays the same 2009 British Open odds as Harrington (+1200).

Garcia is a Spanish professional golfer who plays on both the United States PGA Tour and the European Tour. He has spent much of his career in the top 10 of the Official World Golf Rankings (over 250 weeks between 2000 and 2008.  He reached a career high ranking of two after winning the HSBC Champions tournament in November 2008.

Garcia has not won a Major, though he's finished in the top four at least once in all four Majors to this point.  His highest reach was 2nd place in both the 2007 Open Championship and the 1999 and 2008 PGA Championship.

"Don't get me wrong, there's always disappointment when you are close to winning a championship, but you do not end up winning it, even more so if it's an Open championship," says Garcia, tackling a subject he will be asked to ponder many more times in the coming days. "But you have to take out the positives of those weeks. There are a lot more positives than negatives if you think about it. If you manage to learn from them then you move forward. You are able to get better, not only as a player but also as a person. It's just a matter of making sure you take the right lessons from the experience.

"I have been close, sure. If I have been that close there is not much difference between winning it and losing it. It's just a matter of continuing to give yourself chances. If you keep doing that, at the end of the day, it is going to happen."
