Rebels in Gordon Brown's ruling Labour Party plotted the Prime Minister's departure yesterday, saying he should go if European and local elections went as badly as they feared, according to Frank Prenesti And Matt Falloon of Reuters.

Mr. Brown's authority, weakened by poor poll ratings during his two-year tenure as leader and more recently a scandal over the expenses of members of parliament, has been further undermined by the resignation this week of three cabinet ministers, the Reuters story points out.

Alan Johnson remains the clear 6/4 favourite to become next Labour leader with Mr Purnell installed as 6/1 second favourite, despite claiming in his resignation letter that he has no leadership ambitions.

"Punters believe we are entering the final hours of Brown's premiership - a 2009 election now seems inevitable with Alan Johnson the likely candidate to be given the task of transforming Labour's fortunes," said Ladbrokes spokesman Ciaran O'Brien.

Ladbrokes have posted odds of an election at 1/2 with the Conservative Party most likely to win at 1/12, Labour came in second with 6/1 and the Liberal Democrats come in third at 150/1.

A competing bookmaker claimed that 99 percent of action is coming in on Brown being out by midnight next Saturday.
