Economic Stimulus Package for College Students: Online Poker

College students these days may have a little more money than those of past generations and it's not all about their rich mommies and daddies.  Some have been earning it themselves, even as jobs become more scarce and economic woes mount.

Hunter Fritz isn't making his money working at McDonalds.  The University of Minnesota sophomore plays online poker and wins.

Fritz knew he'd arrived on the poker scene last year when he won a tournament that netted him $160,000 in winnings, he told the University paper, adding that he now plays about three hours per day and considers it his job.

Fritz said he'd rather play online than at a physical table because he enjoys the comfort of his own home, prefers to play up to six tables at once and thinks non-online games progress slowly.

"It allows for a lot of freedom," Fritz (pictured) said.

"You don't necessarily have to work as many hours, but at the same time you have to deal with a lot of stuff no one else has to deal with."

That paper spoke to other students, including Marketing Major Ryan Tongen, who plays online poker up to 40 hours a week and takes in a cool six-figure income each year.

Needless-to-say, students like Hunter and Ryan won't have to worry too much about paying off college loans the rest of their young adult lives.

For these young people, online poker represents a stable industry in an otherwise unstable economy with little sign of recovery over the next several years.

PokerPulse.com estimates online poker to generate $2 billion dollars, despite the fact that some politicians and the US Justice Department have condemned the activity.

Bodog Life: Poker Pro Shannon Elizabeth a "Loser"

Filed under: Dancing With the Stars Betting Odds Season 6, Poker News

Oddsmakers at the popular online gambling and entertainment website, Bodog Life, have essentially given up on the big name poker playing celeb, Shannon Elizabeth, who is part of this season's Dancing With the Stars ensemble, despite rave reviews.

At 18-1 odds, Bodog is basically saying "Shannon can't win".

Elizabeth was widely expected to get far in the competition thanks to her loyal - and some might say horny - fan base.  Before becoming a poker legend, Ms. Elizabeth starred in the sex flick, American Pie.

Elizabeth, who describes poker as her "second career" has been called "one of the leading celebrity poker players." She visits Las Vegas up to three times each month to participate in poker games with the top players of the United States. Elizabeth played in the Main Event of the 2005 World Series of Poker and won a special tournament celebrating the opening of a new poker room at Caesars Palace hotel in January 2006, beating out 83 celebrities and poker professionals to win $55,000. She has also cashed four times in the World Series of Poker in 2006 and 2007, but again busted out of the Main Event early. In 2007, she advanced to the semi-finals of the NBC National Heads-Up Poker Championship in a field consisting of the top poker professionals before losing to eventual champion Paul Wasicka. Among the four opponents she defeated were three World Series of Poker multiple bracelet winners: Jeff Madsen, Barry Greenstein, and Humberto Brenes.

Bodog Founder, Calvin Ayre, once tried to romance Ms. Elizabeth.  The two remain friends but Bodog is yet to secure a major contract to have Elizabeth come on board as part of "Team Bodog".  She would be joining sultry male musician (and star of his own sex flick) David Williams.

It is Kristi Yamaguchi who's the Gambling911.com economic stimulus pick for those betting on Dancing With the Stars.  a $4 bet would still pay out $9 at Bodog Life.

The poker community favorite, Shannon Elizabeth, moves on to the next round of Dancing With the Stars following a double elimination night - the first of the new season.

Elizabeth, who starred in American Pie, is an accomplished poker player.

Elizabeth, who describes poker as her "second career" has been called "one of the leading celebrity poker players."

The online poker room Full Tilt Poker once had a sponsorship agreement with Elizabeth but that eroded.  Bodog Poker we learned this week, is pursuing Shannon Elizabeth.  She is friendly with beloved Bodog founder Calvin Ayre.

“We have a strong community of MySpace and Facebook fans, and we’re happy to give them something for free”, commented Dave Ishere, Poker Room Manager of Reefer Poker. “Although a bit pricier than your normal water pipe or pack of rolling papers, a vaporizer is a way to enjoy marijuana without inhaling any harmful smoke.”

Reefer Poker is unabashedly promoting a safe haven for marijuana enthusiasts to play poker. “Amidst a myriad of politicians coming forth about their drug habits, it seems silly to ignore that the average poker player doesn’t enjoy this wonderful plant, and equally rich culture,” Ishere adds.

Poker Blog Claims Spitzer Call Girl Ashley Alexandra Dupre Has "Man Hands"

Leave it to the boys at WickedChopsPoker to do a little "hand analyses" and come up with the theory that maybe....just maybe...disgraced former New York State Governor Eliot Spitzer call girl Ashley Alaxendra Dupre may have been an Aston Alexander Dupre - i.e. a man.

WCP points to photos that appeared in US Weekly of Ms. Dupre (and yes, we will stick to the "Ms"):

"Just look at those man hands on her. They make ours look dainty. Especially since we just had hot cream manicures done."

You know what they say about guys with big feet!

But the so-called "man hands" theory hasn't quite caught on.

"Anyway, so she probably ain't a dude but the online poker-hating, hooker-loving Spitzer should get a refund for the $4300 he spent on b****** "Kristen" this past February in Washington DC hotel, because the girl is about as far away from being a 5-diamonds escort as Dancing with the Stars' Shannon Elizabeth is away from ever winning an Oscar."

Oh and while we are on the topic of Shannon Elizabeth.  We learn her faith tomorrow (Tuesday night) as the first Dancing With the Stars results show of the new season arrives.

Elizabeth, a favorite of Gambling911.com readers since she doubles as a professional poker player, was described as a "ball of nerves" during her debut.  Hairdressers on the set were calling her Shannon ElizaBITCH.

Elizabeth was currently among the favorites at 6-1.  See all the Dancing With the Stars betting odds here

X-Men Origins: Wolverine to Feature Poker Legend

The movie is called "X-Men Origins: Wolverines", not "XXX-Men Origins: Wolverines Grannies" - therefore it will not be starring granny toe-sucking poker pro David Williams - who is part of Team Bodog - but instead the very likeable Daniel Negreanu.  That's not to say we don't like David Williams.  On the contrary, we love  David Williams.

I'll admit it.  I'm a MILF!

In X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Negreanu will play himself and play poker against Hugh Jackman, who plays Wolverine.

Negreanu discusses the film, among other things, with RawVegas.tv (below).

Daniel Negreanu's parents, Annie and Constantin, moved to Canada from Romania in 1967. When he was several credits short of graduation, Daniel dropped out of high school and began his life as a rounder playing at the local charity casinos and looking for illegal games around the city. While in Toronto, Daniel met and began dating Evelyn Ng, who would also become a well-known professional poker player. After building up his bankroll, he left for Las Vegas at the age of 21 to pursue his dream of becoming a professional poker player. However, "The Strip" got the better of him and he was forced to move back home to Toronto to rebuild his bankroll.

As of 2007, his total live tournament winnings exceed $9,900,000, fourth in winnings, behind only Jamie Gold, Joseph Hachem, and Phil Hellmuth.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine is an upcoming film based on the fictional Marvel Comics character Wolverine, due for release on May 1, 2009. The film is directed by Gavin Hood and stars Hugh Jackman as the title character. It is a prequel to the X-Men film trilogy, focusing on the mutant Wolverine and his time with Team X, before Wolverine's skeleton was bonded with the indestructible metal adamantium.

Unfortunately fans will have to wait more than a year to see Negreanu bluff Wolverine.

This week I sit down with Jeff Ma to discuss the upcoming film "21".  Watch for my interview upcoming.

Deval Patrick Loses in Bid to Ban Online Gambling for Massachusetts Citizens

Attempting to follow in the footsteps of Washington State, angry gamblers (led by a powerful poker playing coalition) made it clear that Massachusetts Governor would not be squashing a billion dollar online gambling industry in favor of special interest casino groups based in that state.   Patrick proposed legalized gambling in Massachusetts but with the stipulation that all online casinos and poker rooms be banned.  Throw in the condition that actual gamblers could ultimately face felony charges much as is the case in Washington State already.

Furious poker players and others led a march this week in protest of the planned legislation.

A card-playing Harvard Law professor and his poker-crazy students were among those who voiced their outrage

“I don’t think filling our expensive jail cells with poker players is what Massachusetts voters had in mind when they elected Deval Patrick,” Nesson said in a statement.

Gambling911.com had also warned in the past that fans of some of the nation's most bet on sports teams could ultimately be held criminally liable.  There would be no more betting on the Patriots, Red Sox and Celtics - at least not by those living in the state.

"Stupid Poker Player of the Decade" Breaks Back

You may recall seeing 22-year-old poker pro Shannon Shorr, a guy, playing last year's WSOP in a back brace and being pushed around in a wheel chair after he fractured two vertebrae and broke his heel.   The boys at WickedChopsPoker did a little investigation and came back with the following:

At the time he didn't say much about what actually happened, just that he was "horsing around" with his roommates when "a major accident happened at the house" (Shannon's blog post about it here).

Well, the accident, if jumping off a 15 foot ledge onto a deflated air mattress counts as an accident, was captured on film in all its jackass glory by his roommate Jerry "JLimbs" Limber, and it just got posted on YouTube today.

The following video contains offensive language not suitable for young children and women.

Shannon Shorr is a 21 year old professional poker player and former University of Alabama Civil Engineering student. He grew up in Birmingham, Alabama where he graduated from Shades Valley High School, where he was a standout prep baseball player. From there he attended the University of Alabama for 2.5 years before withdrawing to pursue a career as a professional poker player. Tuscaloosa, Alabama is still where Shannon calls home, but he has been on the road for the majority of the year playing live tournaments.

He seems to be doing well now, having just finished 25th in the FTP Sunday Million.  Shannon also describes how he was walking with him mum outside.

"I'm going to have to be responsible at some point," Shannon writes in his blog.

Dancing With The Stars Shannon Elizabeth Would Not Make a Good Wife

You can forget Gambling911.com's feeble-minded attempts to marry off billionaire Calvin Ayre to Dancing With the Stars debutante and poker pro Shannon Elizabeth.

Shannon Elizabeth could turn into Shannon Elizabitch, according to TMZ.com, which reports that Shannon has been out of control on the set of this season's Dancing With the Stars....or at least in the dressing room.

The makeup department is on rouge alert. They think she's got incredible diva potential and she's already shunned the makeup artist assigned to her, much the same way it is said she "shunned" Ayre's advances way back when.

On the other side of the rhinestone onesie, Marlee Matlin is the crew fav. She even brings her own hair stuff so the makeup people are loving her.  And so what if she can't hear anything they are say and speaks in signs!

2008 World Series of Poker Europe: Dates Announced

The dates for the second annual World Series of Poker Europe Presented by Betfair have been set, Harrah’s Entertainment, Inc., owner and operator of the most prestigious poker tournaments announced today.

The 2008 World Series of Poker Europe Presented by Betfair (the WSOPE) will be held from September 19th to October 1st, 2008 in London, England.

As with the inaugural event, this year’s tournament will be hosted by London Clubs International and held at their St. James (Fifty), Leicester Square (The Casino at the Empire) and Marble Arch (Sportsman) locations.

“It was a clean sweep for the Europeans last year,” said World Series of Poker Commissioner Jeffrey Pollack. “There are many, many talented players in the European poker community and I think it caught some of the world’s best known poker players by surprise. It’s safe to say the pros haven’t forgotten about last year and the young guns should expect a tougher fight in 2008.”

The schedule for the 2008 WSOPE is currently being finalized and will be released upon completion.

“Last year produced a fantastic tournament which exceeded all expectations,” said David Yu, CEO, Betfair. “Online qualification for the 2008 event is already underway so we’re expecting an even better contest this time around.”

“We look forward to again serving as hosts for this prestigious event,” said Michael Silberling, COO, London Clubs International. “A first class tournament at our first class properties promises to bring out the best poker players in the world.”

WSOPE in London complements the WSOP held annually in Las Vegas. The inaugural 2007 event saw Norway’s Annette Obrestad best a field that included Doyle Brunson, Phil Hellmuth and Johnny Chan to win the largest amount ever for a female, £1 million – or U.S. $2,013,102.

A professional poker player and his wife who were both found dead in their home last week were murdered, authorities said Monday.

And the killings are being investigated to see whether poker played any role, they said.

According to media reports, Ernest Scherer Jr., 60, and his wife, Charlene Abendroth, 57, were found dead Friday morning shortly before 1 a.m. in their home at the Castlewood Country Club in Pleasanton, California, USA, near Oakland, California, USA. After their daughter in Utah was unable to reach them by telephone, she contacted someone at the country club who went to their home, found the bodies and called authorities.

At a press conference Monday, law enforcement authorities said the poker pro and his wife of 31 years were savagely beaten inside their home and were dead for at least a week before their bloodied and pajama-clad bodies were discovered.

Harvard Goes After Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick Over Planned Online Poker Prohibition

Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick wants to follow in Washington State's footsteps and make gambling online a Class C felony.  That state's most prestigious university will do its part to stop him.

A card-playing Harvard Law professor and his poker-crazy students will stage a protest today outside the State House rallying against Gov. Deval Patrick’s casino plan.

Scott Van Voorhis of the Boston Herald reports that while most opponents, ranging from church leaders to social activists, will be warning of the perils of expanded gambling, the Harvard group will be arguing there is not nearly enough.

In particular, the newly formed Global Poker Strategic Thinking Society is targeting a provision in the governor’s bill that Massachusetts residents caught gambling online would face up to two years in jail and a fine of as much as $25,000.

Harvard Law School professor Charles Nesson, an avid player who formed the Harvard poker society, plans to testify today at a State House hearing on Patrick’s casino bill. The Harvard group contends that as many as 400,000 Massachusetts residents play poker online.

“I don’t think filling our expensive jail cells with poker players is what Massachusetts voters had in mind when they elected Deval Patrick,” Nesson said in a statement.

Deval has seemingly gone unchallenged in his attempts to prohibit online poker as a means of boosting his state's own casino industry, despite a recent ruling by the World Trade Organization (WTO) that found the US Government has engaged in "protectionism" of its own gambling industry, specifically the horse racing sector.

The Herald points out that the rally comes after weeks of crusading by Nesson and other members of his Harvard poker society on the issue. Nesson has written to Patrick, and to top casino executives with an interest in Massachusetts, urging that the penalties for online gambling be dropped, said Andrew Woods, a Harvard law student and a spokesman for the Global Poker Strategic Thinking Society.

The group has also enlisted the help of the  nearly one million player strong Poker Players Alliance and its leader, Alfonse D'Amato.

“It is hypocritical to attach this to a casino gambling bill,” said Woods. “You could get a couple DUIs before you get two years in jail in the commonwealth.”

The inaugural Bodog Poker Open drew to a close on Sunday, March 9 with 596 online poker players making Bodog history as they competed for a share of a whopping $305,120 prize pool in the series' championship, the Bodog Poker Open Main Event.

The total cash purse, which included $25,000 in additional money added by Bodog, makes the Bodog Poker Open Main Event the richest poker tournament ever held in Bodog history, and walking away the richest from the record-setting event was Shawn "phatcat" Luman. His first-place finish not only earned him a $76,280 payday, but also the distinction of becoming the first-ever Bodog Poker Champion and the owner of a brand new engraved Omega Speedmaster watch, valued at $4,400.

"By all accounts the inaugural Bodog Poker Open was a resounding success," says Morris Mohawk Gaming Group CEO Alwyn Morris. "The number of players that competed for the $305,120 prize pool was astounding and Bodog is looking forward to hosting even more exciting poker events in the future."

The path to victory was not an easy one for Luman as the talent-rich field contained many of the biggest names in the online poker world. Making it down to the final three at the final table was none other than Jared "TheWacoKidd" Hamby, one of the hottest players on the poker circuit today with three live tournament wins in 2007 and a second place finish at the 2007 WPT Mandalay Bay Poker Championship. On Sunday night Luman proved the better as Hamby exited in third place, winning $29,138.96, while Michael "_TheFinisher_" Berra finished second, earning $45,768.

The remaining players at the final table, in order of finish, were: Stuart "zpaceman" Taylor (4th - $21,358.40), "CK3" (5th - $16,781.60), "Anbessa" (6th - $13,730.40), Brian "PSP_addict" Bauer (8th - $7,933.12) and Eric "Eeman2004" Revak (9th - $5,187.04).

Among the 54 players who cashed in the $500 buy-in online poker tournament were quite a few who enjoyed success in the five preliminary events of the Bodog Poker Open. Bodog regular "rusostreet," who won Event No. 1 on Monday, finished in 41st place, and Event No. 5 winner, "bigcatfish," finished in 47th, while Joe "Dyzalot" Morneau, who final tabled Event No. 1, ended up in 40th place. The three players each added $1,067.92 to their Bodog Poker Open winnings on Sunday night.

As the biggest online poker tournament in Bodog history, the Bodog Poker Open got off to a phenomenal start last Monday, March 3 with Event No. 1. The $270 buy-in No-Limit Holdem tournament set the pace for the week by drawing many of the world's top online poker players, including Annette "Annette_15" Obrestad, Kevin "beLOWaBOVe" Saul, Marco "CrazyMarco" Johnson, Jon "PearlJammer" Turner, Eric "Rizen" Lynch and Thayer "Thay3r" Rasmussen, and it saw Team Bodog pros Evelyn Ng and Josh Arieh outlasting all but one to finish second and third, respectively.

All together, the six-event Bodog Poker Open drew more than 1,800 players over the week and generated more than $675,000 in prize money, a generous $75,000 of which was added by Bodog to give players extraordinary value for their buy-ins.

With the first Bodog Poker Open now in the books, online poker players are turning their attention to Bodog's 2008 World Series of Poker qualifiers. A guaranteed four WSOP seats are up for grabs every week at the Bodog Poker tables this March and April, with that number jumping to five per week in May and June. Each Main Event prize package includes the $10,000 buy-in to the tournament, $2,000 for travel expenses, loads of Team Bodog gear and the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience Las Vegas in total Bodog style, including meeting the Bodog Girls and much, much more.
