Online Poker Bluffing (Part II)In Byron Badd's previous review of online poker bluffing we looked at - among other things - your opponents continually changing and your not having enough time to really get a feel for other players; avoid having callers when bluffing; and the best place to bluff when playing online poker is when the game is short-handed or perhaps in the higher limit games.
Some other things you should know about online poker bluffing - a la Mr. Badd:
"Bluffs have a better chance of working at tight tables," claims Badd. "On loose tables, your chances are close to zilch unless all the 'loose' players have folded."
As Badd points out in his previous online poker bluffing piece, there is no sense in bluffing at low limit tables.
"In the low-limit games, online bluffing just doesn’t hold the appeal it does in person."
There really is no advantage bluffing with low limit tables either since you get called so frequently.
Even more importantly perhaps is that online poker bluffing works best in No Limit Holdem. The reason: you can push many more chips into the pot than in limit.
In No Limit Texas Holdem strong players can make bluffs work to their advantage. The same player can bet as much as he or she wants.
As PokerCheckRaise.com point out: If they bet $120 or more it makes it a very difficult decision for the other player to call. They have to have a very strong read on the player making the bet in order to commit so much money when the player is representing the flush. It also takes a great deal of heart on the player representing the flush to make a large bet on the end as well.
One important thing to realize is that while online poker bluffing in No Limit Holdem as its advantages, successful bluffing is quite difficult and can only be accomplished by having a full understanding of other players at the online table.
Another key to successful online poker bluffing: Bluff from late positions only.
"If the other players are all folding, checking, calling, you should definitely go for the pot," Badd suggests. "It is one of the most common bluffs and they called it the "late position steal". This happens when you are in late position and everyone has shown weakness.
The thing is, even when people know you're on a steal raise, frequently they can't call. The two main times this happens are pre-flop when everyone folds around and you're on the button or one off the button, now you're just raising into the blinds who have random hands and will often have to fold.
The main thing to remember is that online poker bluffing is all about deception. Being predictable will translate into your failure when it comes to bluffing in poker.
"Online poker bluffing is an important skill you must be able to master," offers Byron Badd.
