  • Risk Taking is the odds-on 5-2 favorite to win Saturday's Wood Memorial, paying $50 for every $20 bet

  • He definitely has the advantage having won already at Aqueduct Race Track

  • But Risk Taking faces stiff competition mainly in the form of Prevalence and Weyburn for a shot at instant entry in this year's Kentucky Derby

The field was certainly tight for Saturday evening's Wood Memorial with Risk Taking, Weyburn and Prevalence all having short odds to win.

Risk Taking is the favorite, promising a payout of $50 for every $20 bet.

This does make perfect sense.  He's already won twice at Aqueduct, the race track that hosts the Wood Memorial.

He's also trained by the formidable Chad Brown.

“He just ran a little faster, stronger, more professional,” Brown said. “He’s getting it together now, this horse, physically and mentally. I see an improving horse that can run as far as you want them to go.”

Risk Taking will also have familiarity with the Wood Memorial distance of 1 1/8-mile race.

“I don’t think it makes sense to attempt to move the horse out of the environment where he’s thriving,” Brown said back in February.

This Grade 2 horse race, and one of the final preps for the Kentucky Derby, features a purse of $750,000.  The reward for winning is 100 Kentucky Derby qualifying points and a guaranteed spot in next month's crown jewel of the Triple Crown in Louisville.
