Mike Wilkining of the Sporting News Linesmakers suggests a win is not guaranteed for Shared Belief:

Undefeated gelding Shared Belief rates a strong chance of being the first three-year-old to win the Classic since Raven’s Pass in 2008. The 8-to-5 morning-line favorite in Saturday’s Classic (Race 12, 8:35 p.m. ET, NBC) Shared Belief is 7-for-7 all-time, including a victory in the Grade 1 Awesome Again Stakes at Santa Anita in September.

The victory at Santa Anita was Shared Belief’s second on dirt; his other wins were on synthetic surfaces. And — for argument’s sake — his fairly light Beyer Speed Figures in his dirt wins (104, 101) perhaps could signal he’s not quite the monster on dirt that he is on synthetic.

Here is one of the biggest reasons Shared Belief might not win Saturday’s Breeders Cup Classic: He’s got a huge target on his head.

It appears that other horse owners may have conspired to block Shared Belief in his last race.

Fed Biz broke on top from the inside post position under Martin Garcia, with Bob Baffert stablemate Sky Kingdom also hustling to get a good early position under Victor Espinoza. Shared Belief also showed speed and was carried very wide around the first turn by Espinoza, allowing Fed Biz to enjoy an uncontested lead. Winner of the G2 San Diego Handicap at Del Mar in wire to wire fashion in August, Fed Biz set fractions of :22.84 for the first quarter and :46.52 for the half mile. Mystery Train challenged Fed Biz down the backstretch through six furlongs in 1:10.59 while Espinoza forced Smith even further to the outside as the far turn approached.

“They tried some tactics on him,” Mike Smith said in a post-race interview. “Fortunately for us, they didn’t work.”
