Belmont Stakes 2010 Picks

The good folks from BetUS.com today have offered a few Belmont Stakes 2010 picks while breaking down the field.  Who do the oddsmakers at BetUS.com like?

First Dude at 7/2 odds ranks pretty high up on their list.

"The colt led most of the way in the Preakness, but could not hold off Lookin At Lucky, and had to settle for the runner up spot," states Michael Dempsey, Analyst for the BetUS.com website.  "In his three previous starts he was beaten by Stately Victor, Ice Box, and Fly Down. "However, early speed is a dangerous thing, and he appears to be the lone speed in this field. If he manages to shake loose early he could prove tough to run down late."

Dave in Dixie has some terrific value at 20/1 odds (paying $200 for every $10 bet should he win)  This horse isn't necessarily proven but the jockey sure is.  He'll be ridden by Calvin Borel, "who seems to do no wrong in big races the last few years," Dempsey says.  Certainly when considering one's Belmont Stakes 2010 picks, Borel cannot be overlooked, regardless of what horse he might be riding.  We would be remiss, however, in pointing out that this colt was soundly beaten in the Illinois Derby in his last start and lost five races in a row since his debut.  Ouch!  Hence, the 20/1 odds.

Make Music For Me (10/1 odds) is another of the Belmont Stakes picks, though Dempsey seems a bit luke warm.

"The colt was dismissed at 30/1 in the Derby and figures to get more play in the Belmont with his late running style. The Derby was his first start on a conventional surface."

Favored Ice Box (3/1 odds) gets the nod from Dempsey.

"The colt had a nightmare trip in the Kentucky Derby and still was rolling at the end, coming up just 2 ½ lengths shy of Super Saver, who got a dream trip. Zito skipped the Preakness to have him ready for the Belmont, and he looks like a legit threat as the likely favorite. The last betting favorite to win the race was Afleet Alex in 2005."
