She was battered unconscious and left with multiple fractures and severe internal injuries after being dragged into the bookmaking shop’s toilet.  When authorities arrived she was covered in so much blood, they could not determine that she was a woman.

According to court records, the 43-year-old assailant had just lost £400 in 20 minutes on a roulette machine.

Prosecutor Andy Easteal told Stafford crown court: “Her lungs were damaged, her nose was broken and her cheekbone and neck were fractured.”

Singh, of Leicester, was convicted of attempted murder and sexual assault.  The judge recommended a minimum 14 year sentence but could serve a life term.

His cousin, Balbir Singh, was sentenced to two years for helping him evade arrest.

Just last month, the Guardian featured an extensive report on the dangers of working in the United Kingdom’s bookmaking business.
