Established Gambling Destinations Like Vegas Faltering According to Moody’s

LAS VEGAS (Associated Press) — Established gambling towns like Las Vegas and Atlantic City are hurting as more states start welcoming bettors’ dollars, Moody’s Investors Service warned last week.

The credit rating agency issued a report describing a shift in casino tax revenues away from New Jersey, Indiana and Nevada to new markets in places like Pennsylvania, Illinois and Ohio.

Son-In-Law of India’s Cricket Boss Charged in Betting Scandal

(Reuters) - Pakistan umpire Asad Rauf and the son-in-law of the Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) president were charged by Mumbai Police on Saturday in a betting scandal surrounding the Indian Premier League Twenty20 tournament.

Gurunath Meiyappan, son-in-law of BCCI president N. Srinivasan, was arrested in May after being quizzed by police probing illegal betting on the Twenty20 league.

A total of 22 people have been charged for gambling, cheating and fraud, the police said.

Queens DA Indicts 6 for Running Gambling Ring, Trafficking Cocaine and Heroin

NEW YORK (Associated Press) — Authorities say six people have been indicted in connection with a New York gambling ring that handled an estimated $1 million in bets a year.

Authorities say about 30 betting parlors operated through a central wire room in Brooklyn.

Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown says the family-run ring operated in Queens, Brooklyn and Nassau County.

Dozens of TSA Employees Fired Over Illegal Gambling (Video)

An illegal gambling ring involving Transportation Security Administration workers at Pittsburgh International Airport had been broken up with dozens of employees either fired or suspended.  Some 300 more employees working at the airport were also scrutinized as a result of the scandal.

Casino Tour Bus Crashes in San Diego County: 8 Injured

SAN DIEGO — (Associated Press) - For the third time in less than a month, a tour bus heading to a Southern California casino has crashed.

The California Highway Patrol says eight people were hurt, including the driver, when a bus veered off the road and through a fence Thursday morning near Valley Center in San Diego County.

The worst injury was a suspected broken leg.

Brett Parker Dad Convicted of Bookmaking (Video)

Convicted killer Brett Parker, his dad and another man have been found guilty of bookmaking in South Carolina.

A federal jury in Columbia deliberated for five hours. Brett’s father, Jack, and Doug Taylor were found to have had an active role in running the massive illegal bookie business.

Brett Parker is already serving a life sentence for murdering his wife, Tammy Jo, and business partner, Bryan Capnerhurst.

Jury Deliberations Begin Today in Brett Parker Bookie Case

The trial lasted no more than two days and the jury will begin deliberations Wednesday in the case of South Carolina bookmaker Brett Parker.

Parker is already convicted and serving a life sentence for the murder of his wife, Tammy Jo, and one of his employees.

British Players Charged in Australian Match-Fixing Probe

London side Hornchurch players Reiss Noel and Joe Woolley have been charged by Australian police as being part of a match-fixing scheme. 

Both men had been transferred to the Southern Stars in Australia over the summer.

The match-fixing investigation was prompted by information provided by the Football Federation of Australia (FFA), according to the BBC.

What Happens When Mom and Dad Have a Gambling Addiction

(Reuters) - Donna Zaharevitz began gambling after a birthday visit in her late 40s to the Mohegan Sun casino in Uncasville, Connecticut.

Lonely, with four children in college and her husband busy with a demanding job, Zaharevitz soon returned.

"I had been a caregiver, but all of the sudden, there was nobody to care for," Zaharevitz says.

She spiraled out of control in her early 50s, losing more than $200,000, decimating her family's savings and her retirement funds. Her husband divorced her, and one of her four kids still doesn't talk to her.

A 19-year-old man has been arrested in Argentina for allegedly hacking into online gambling sites and payment processors.

Governor Opposed to North Carolina Casino Project

KINGS MOUNTAIN, N.C. — (Associated Press) - Gov. Pat McCrory says he has strong concerns about a Native American tribe's plans to build a gambling casino on land along a busy North Carolina interstate.

The South Carolina-based Catawba Indian Nation has filed an application with federal officials to buy 16 acres near Kings Mountain for a planned gambling casino the tribe says would create thousands of new jobs. That was the first step in a long process to build a casino just across the border from South Carolina in North Carolina.

Six Senior Citizens Among Those Arrested for Role in Illegal Gambling Ring

Ten individuals, including six senior citizens, have been busted for running an illegal gambling ring in Indianapolis.  An 83-year-old man was among those arrested.

Detectives also confiscated a little over $4,400 in cash. Officers removed pull tab machines, 13 brown boxes, and some suspected cocaine, according to WISH-TV.

Prosecutors have charged the suspects with professional gambling.  Police had conducted raids on the same property twice in the past two months.

Gordon Taylor Insists He Can Still Lead PFA Despite Gambling Charges

England's Professional Footballers' Association head Gordon Taylor insists he is still capable of remaining in charge despite gambling allegations lodged against him. 

The Sun reportedly last month that Taylor, who has been in the role since 1981, gambled four million pounds in 2000 bets over two-and-half years, and owed a now-defunct telephone betting firm just over 100,000 pounds.

New Jersey Casino Revenue Down Nearly 5 Percent

Atlantic City, NJ - (Associated Press) - Atlantic City’s casino revenue fell by nearly 5 percent in August, as gamblers won table games at a higher rate than usual.

The city’s 12 casinos took in $298.1 million, down 4.8 percent from August 2012.

Revenue from table games was $78.6 million, down 10.5 percent from a year ago. The state Division of Gaming Enforcement said the casinos fared worse at table games than they did a year ago.

Slot machine revenue was $219.5 million, down 2.6 percent.

PA Lawmaker Caught Up in Illegal Gambling Investigation Wiretap

GLASSPORT, Pa. — (Associated Press) - A western Pennsylvania lawmaker overheard on a wiretap telling the suspected ringleader of an illegal gambling operation that he would conceal a complaint about the man's video poker machines says he has cooperated with investigators and tried to help the person who complained about the machines.

State Rep. Marc Gergely, D-Allegheny, broke his silence Monday on the wiretap information disclosed last week before the House Democratic Caucus.
