Murdered Vietnamese High Roller Peter Tan Hoang Accused of Laundering $1 Billion
High roller Peter Tan Hoang stands accused of gambling some $1 billion in laundered money according to Australian authorities. Hoang will not stand trial, however, as he was murdered in Sydney this past September.
The 36-year-old Vietnamese refugee was known for his heavy gambling. He would ultimately gain the reputation of a “whale” and one of Australian casinos biggest spenders.
Hoang had ties to a notorious Australian crime syndicate according to court filings.
Authorities have yet arrested anyone in connection to the fatal shooting of Hoang in the face but believe his associations had some role in the slaying.
“We have certainly considered that he was involved in drug trafficking and moving money through casinos,” New South Wales police commander Mick Willing said. “[That] may have been a catalyst for his death.”
Casino.org noted the extent of Hoang’s play.
Court records also show that Hoang would play games at truly nosebleed stakes: in September 2012, for instance, he was recorded playing baccarat for an average of A$106,000 ($87,000) per hand.
