PartyGaming Claims US Legal Issues Gave It Advantage

PartyGaming's settlement of its US liabilities has given it an advantage over rivals in the consolidation of the online gambling market, according to Jim Ryan, chief executive.

The operator of PartyPoker followed up its $105m (£64.4m) settlement with the US Department of Justice in April with a £72m cash purchase in July of online bingo website Cashcade from Independent News & Media, beating a bid from 888. It paid £12.3m for the World Poker Tour.

Online Poker Funds Will Remain Seized: Judge Throws Out Case

U.S. District Judge Jeffrey Miller in San Diego denied a bid Thursday by lawyers for the company, Account Services Inc., and the Poker Players Alliance to return the money.

On June 2, the US Attorney's Office in Manhattan seized approximately $40 million in funds belonging to Full Tilt Poker and PokerStars, the two largest online poker rooms.  Some of that money was being transferred through Account Services, Inc.

After filing a motion asking for return of the funds, the US Attorney's Office issued an indictment against Account Services owner Douglas Rennick.

Sports Leagues Challenge Extent of Delaware's Exemption

America's major sports leagues, in new court papers, are challenging the state's contention that Congress intended to allow Delaware to expand its sports betting options.

In advance of Monday's showdown before the U.S. 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals, the leagues' lawyers filed a brief arguing that Delaware's exemption from a 1992 federal ban on sports betting did not give the state carte blanche to offer bets on single games or sports other than pro football.
