FoxSports on Tuesday released its rankings of the states in the union that hate the New York Patriots the most ahead of their Super Bowl 51 appearance.

Make no mistake about it, the Patriots have been a very good team over the past decade-and-a-half, few can argue this and they have a few Super Bowl rings to show for it.

But the Patriots have also been accused of (and caught) cheating over the years, including the videotaping of opponents' defensive signals and more recently the deflation of opponents footballs (Deflategate).  The later scandal has prompted oddsmakers to post prop wagers on the number of times Deflategate is mentioned during the Super Bowl 51 broadcast.

Before we take a look at the haters, those that hate the Pats the least should be of no surprise.

Massachusetts, where the Patriots play, trailed the list of states that hate them the most.  Maine, Rhode Island, New Hampshire and Vermont, all New England regional states, followed.

Fox Sports described Connecticut as the weakest of the New England states in terms of love to the Pats because the Giants and Jets have some pull in the southwest corner.

And the non-New England team that hated them the least?

That honor went to Montana, followed by Nevada, as wagering on the Pats has made plenty a sports bettor their rich in recent years, no more so than this season where New England maintained a stellar 15-3 record Against The Spread.

So which states hate the Patriots the most?

Prior to looking at the list we here at Gambling911.com would have though New Jersey, Florida or New York, where the Pats division rivals play as well as their arch nemesis and Championship game killers, the Giants.

Leading the pack, however, we would have guessed Indiana.  After all, it was the home state Colts that fell victim to Deflategate, now with Andrew Luck at the QB helm.  Of course there was one of the greatest rivalries in NFL history between Tom Brady and former Colts quarterback Peyton Manning.

The Top Five turned out to be the following, according to Fox Sports:

5. New Jersey - Jets fans, Giants fans, Eagles fans ... it doesn't matter. If you live in New Jersey, you hate the Patriots.

4.  Indiana - The Colts-Patriots rivalry was the best rivalry in football for nearly a decade, until the Colts faded into obscurity over the last two years while the Patriots have remained excellent. The hate remains, and the Colts' late struggles only intensifies it.

3.  Maryland – This one surprised as a lot but Fox Sports notes that there has been a bitter taste left in the mouths of Ravens fans, and the reason for this:  The trick plays and wonky offense the Patriots used against them in the playoffs two seasons ago still rankle Ravens fans, who can hold a grudge as well as anyone.

2. New York – This one seems obvious between the Giants and Bills.  Jets fans are supposed to live in New Jersey but there are a fair number of them residing throughout New York as well and, as Fox Sports notes so eloquently, Giants Nation has the added indecency of seeing their success written off as fluke-ish as compared to the Patriots' sustained greatness.

1. Pennsylvania – Especially after this post season. And it’s not just conference rivals the Pittsburgh Steelers that New England have made fools of in recent years.  Fox Sports notes: The Eagles lost by a field goal to the Patriots in Super Bowl XXXIX and had to sit by idly as the team was labeled a dynasty.  Wherever your allegiances lie in the state of Pennsylvania, you hate the Patriots. You hate them so well.
