Freitas was an attacking midfielder who played for Esporte Clube São Bento. That club was scheduled to play this coming Sunday 4 November with odds of 5/1 facing off against Ponte Preta.  This shock death will certainly affect the club ahead of Sunday's matchup.  Gamblers should be aware of this tragic story.

His Serie A club is the top division in Brazil, equivalent of the Premier League in the UK.

A tweet was issued by the club in Portuguese, which translates into English here:

"The Sao Paulo football club deeply regrets the death of midfielder Daniel Correa Freitas.  "The club sympathises and pays condolences to the athlete's family."

Local media outlets in Brazil claim the cause of death to have been "torture".

Quoting a municipal guard, the report stated: "From the appearance of the body, it was a very violent situation.

"The man had two deep cuts on his neck, his head was nearly beheaded, and his genitals were severed."

This is one of two tragedies to hit the Football world over the weekend.

The Thai billionaire owner of English Premier League team Leicester City was among five people who died after his helicopter crashed and burst into flames just moments after taking off from a soccer field.
