England boss Roy Hodgson has urged his young England team to play fearless football and not be inhibited by decades of under achievement from previous generations.

“We don’t want them to be fearful,” said Hodgson. “This group don’t have baggage. They aren’t weighed down by the sins of the fathers.

“Let’s not batter these lads with past failures of previous England teams going back from 1970 to 2014. That’s what our message will be.

“The Euros will provide our players with experience, and I do believe many of them will go on to future tournaments and be even better than they will be this summer.

“But that belief doesn’t alter our hopes, our ambitions and our dreams. We want to go to France and play well and win matches.”
