Steve McQueen Oscar Odds for Best Director Would Pay Out Nearly $700
There is a bit of an interesting wagering option at this year’s Oscars in that “12 Years a Slave” is considered a big favorite to win for Best Picture yet its Director, Steve McQueen is a long shot to win Best Director at just shy of 7/1 odds. Instead, the favorite to win Best Director is one Alfonso Cuaron for “Gravity”.
We can look at this in one of three ways: Best Director will be an upset with McQueen paying out the 7/1 odds, “Best Picture” will be an upset with “Gravity” winning at 3/1 odds, or there really will be a fairly significant variance between Best Director and Best Picture.
Upsets are not common when it comes to the Oscars yet, when they happen, it tends to occur with the Best Picture and sometimes the Best Director category.
Case in point: “Crash” beat out heavily favored “Brokeback Mountain” back in 2006. “Crash” was not necessarily a long shot to win as the film had odds just short of 3/1 at most online books.
It’s interesting to note that, while McQueen is considered a long shot in the Best Director category, the same is not true for “Gravity” despite “12 Years a Slave” having 1/6 odds. “Gravity” would pay out $30 for every $10 bet, McQueen would pay out $70 or $700 for every $100 bet.
