It’s Official: PokerStars Applies for NJ License to Operate Atlantic Club Casin

While news broke earlier in the year that the world’s largest real money online poker room was in talks to acquire the Atlantic Club Casino and Hotel in Atlantic City, PokerStars had not yet filed for the necessary licensing application with New Jersey’s Gaming Commission.

The company filed the application last week and will now undergo a 90-day review.  Most industry experts believe PokerStars will ultimately be permitted to operate in the state.

The American Gaming Association (AGA) in Nevada has petitioned to keep Stars from gaining access to the lucrative New Jersey gambling market, citing various improprieties.

For its part, Stars wants entry into the US market via New Jersey after the state legalized real money online poker and other forms of Web gambling last month.

There most certainly is a quagmire that currently exists as explained by John Brennan of NorthJersey.com:

While the state agencies are tasked to make the decision, Governor Christie’s authority is such that the up or down vote will surely be taken as a referendum on him.

If the bid is accepted, there will be outcry about whether the state is overly loosening its famously stringent regulations to make way for a foreign company that offered Americans a chance to play online poker in a time of murky legality.

If rejected, the Atlantic Club could close – sending more than 1,000 workers to the unemployment line just as Christie’s re-election campaign is nearing its full effort.

Nevada’s Gaming Association can’t exactly cast stones as one of their own, Sheldon Adelson, is battling accusations that his company, Sands of Las Vegas, obtained a gaming license in the Asian casino enclave of Macau under questionable circumstances.  Adelson denies these allegations.

A former association of Adelson is suing for $328 million, claiming he was brought on board to influence the Chinese government as a means of obtaining a Macau gaming license.  The casino industry there is also known to have ties to organized criminal elements.
