Akron was the number 12 seed with a record of 12-6 facing the number 5 seed VCU with a record of 26-8.

VCU lost its final game of the season Sunday facing Saint Louis.

The Rams shot 3 for 18 from behind the arc in that game.

"Our whole style of play is to get the other team rattled, and I think for a stretch there we had it going the way we wanted," VCU coach Shaka Smart said. "They were having trouble even getting the ball inbounds. But then they've got some older guys that stepped up, that made big shots."

VCU has won 10 of their last 13 games while Akron has won 11 of its last 13.

Virginia Commonwealth has enjoyed an impressive tournament run Against The Spread since 1993, going 11-1 over that period.

When the total was 130 to 139.5 over the past season, VCU managed to go just 3-11 ATS.

Akron has also had a solid tournament record over the past three seasons, going 14-4 Against The Spread.

When playing against a team with a winning record after 15 or more games, the Zips are 21-7 ATS over the past three seasons.

Akron point guard Alex Abreu's shocking arrest for drug trafficking last week near campus had threatened to derail a special season for the Zips. Akron had a 19-game winning streak and gained national attention before Abreu was arrested the day before a loss at home to the Golden Flashes in the regular-season finale.

Akron’s win against Kent State last week punched their ticket into the NCAA Tournament.
