In May 2018 the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that states could begin offering sports betting, including via the Web. While the Oscars may not seem like a sports betting event (and indeed it is not), for years the awards show has been a pivotal part of sportsbook offerings throughout the world. In fact, outside of the U.S. Presidential elections and a handful of other big political events like Brexit, the Oscars has long been the most bet on single day non-sporting event.
Even though Virginia and Maryland are not ready to host online sportsbooks at this time, you can still bet the Oscar here.
For its part, Maryland is looking to fast track sports betting in the state.
A voter-approved referendum has long been considered a precursor for Maryland to allow the activity, but state legislative leaders and casino and racetrack lobbyists are now studying a plan in which the state would place the regulation of sports betting under the lottery and gaming agency. This could lead to Oscar betting as early as 2020.
“This issue was just recently raised as an option,” said Alexandra Hughes, chief of staff to House Speaker Michael E. Busch. Hughes and others said officials must still determine whether such an approach is legal.
Virginia Delegate Marcus Simon (D-District 53) filed a bill last month. the “Virginia Electronic Sports Betting Law” that focuses solely on “electronic sports betting,” rather than calling for brick-and-mortar venues.
HB 2210 calls for a 10 percent tax rate on adjusted gross revenue, a $5,000 application fee with an annual $1,000 renewal fee, and would prohibit betting on college sports from all states.
Whether either state will include Oscars as part of their betting plan remains to be seen, but why wait when you can bet the Academy Awards online here now.
